I like what you said about counting our blessings. My late father-in-law always said, " if I count all my blessings, I'll never have time for complaining."
Thanks for the shooting advice.

Doing what "feels right" and what works for you is the most important aspect of traditional archery, in my humble opinion. Too much "thinking" never helped me improve my shooting !

The casual style of shooting is definitely my favorite.

Archery has been a passion of mine since I was just a little kid, and it was always just sort of planking around.

I got into there for a while with Rob Green, where the competition side of archery and learning ““ the proper way to shoot, ripped the joy from me. I am now back to just my casual style shooting and it is so fun.

Amen and Amen. I too missed a buck in Kansas at literally spitting distance. Why? Because of all the things you said. I had a complete meltdown! This year I am back to swing draw - looking at the spot to full draw and "letting her eat." No more seeing the arrow - just what I want to hit. I could not agree more with "it feels good again!" AND I'm hitting where I am looking! God bless you!

Love it. I have a funny story about trying to hunt a starling. A group moved into my yard and started taking over one of the bird houses. I have been trying to get them with my bow, they are wily little things holy moly. Anyways I was working on "proper form" for about two weeks before this. Trying to get perfect back tension, hit anchor and expand etc. Was working good standing in front of a hay bale. When I went to shoot at the starling it felt like I have never shot a bow in my life before. I was so focused on form and trying to get that perfect draw length and back tension that I must have developed a little bit of target panic. The shot went absolutely crazy, probably one of the worst shots I have ever made. All because I was so focused on "proper form" instead of just focusing on the spot and letting it rip. Keeping it simple is the name of the game. Great video 😊🙏

I have found the same thing! A couple arrows with Judo points, a few old punky pieces of firewood and I have found my evening routine before heading in for the night. It’s very relaxing and mind clearing to concentrate on where you want to hit and let your mind, body and bow do the rest! It’s almost meditative! Shooting has become joyful again and not just a mechanical sequence.

Enjoy the art of the bow and arrow brothers and sisters!

I'm moving to the same style myself. More instinctive and less frill!

Good stuff RC!
I agree. If I start thinking too much I can’t hit the broadside of a barn! The key for me is find the spot and bare down.

Immediately sub'd and thank you. Due to an old shoulder injury, my form is not a thing of beauty-but I sure do enjoy shooting my long bow. Your discipline with the "fork and spoon" reminded me of an old saying: "you can't out train your diet." Good video.

If it makes it enjoyable an fun you won’t have to make yourself shoot you will want to! At least that’s how it works for me, thanks for sharing JIK

It is all about having fun when shooting, totally having fun, being relaxed and enjoying it. When it becomes work, you've lost the simple pure fun. Making it where you don't want to quit shooting. Why shooting a tennis ball and chasing it all over a yard or a field is so fun. shoot with a blunt, on an arrow or a flu flu. shoot from where your arrow ends up to where the ball stops. a much smaller ball forces you to focus smaller. make a game out of it. the ideal small target would be about 1/2" diameter, about marble size. something replaceable and not messy. practice very close, once shot a copperhead in the head between my feet. Master the close with tiny stuff, then a deer is like shooting an elephant LOL. Make it fun and keep it fun. Kind of like the Plan of Salvation, very simple and easy. Thanks Robert

Nate's blog has some shooting technique tidbits that he's shared from his time with John. Its about about being fluid. I enjoy and practice both styles. Sometimes in a hunting situation, you may need to hold for a few seconds to get that shot you were expecting to happen sooner. Sometimes you need to get one off much quicker.

Looking good Mr Carter. Thanks for all the tips. I think by the Fall you'll be in Ram shape.

Boy you and I are a lot alike, haha!! I too, messed up an opportunity on a very nice buck at about 10 yards...broadside!! And I was using a bow with training wheels!! I'm also trying to lose weight by eating different, but like you, my daily routines haven't changed. Just my man that's the hardest thing I've ever done!!! Keep cranking out the videos, we like em!

I’m trying to get down under 200lbs, I hurt in all my joints. I’ve lost 12lbs in 4 days eating chicken and vegetables and not eating after 12:00. I walk and lift weights every day and I’m beginning to notice a difference in my joints. Keep up the good work Robert

I've shot that hill style with a recurve and it will work. But I didn't like the movement . But I would shoot every day .Shooting 3 arrows everyday will make a difference. I need to get back in this habit. How beautiful the flight of the arrow is when you enjoy what your doing. The Bow and arrow becomes a part of you

I’m literally uploading a very similar video as I’m watching this lol. I’m trying a more fluid style of shooting my ASL. I’ve tried them all. Anchor, feather to nose, etc. Nothing is working as well as just picking a spot and going with the flow! And I’m more accurate at ranges just like you said. It just feels more natural, at least with the ASL. I’m very surprised how I’m getting similar or better accuracy. And you’re right; it’s a ton more fun. In fact, I think I even say I’m “channeling my inner Robert Carter” in the video lol. Thanks again for the vid.

Robert, Amen Brother! And, The Lord do also "Speak" in mysterious ways! But you have no idea of how we've traveled a very similar path together, "Still Small Voice" between us! But back to the Casual Simplicity? I haven't shot my bow in about 2 weeks! But, it's just a tool, that's important to both us! So, worthy of serious work!
Let it eat!
