Hitchhiker's Thumb

I often get asked about my thumbs. This is just how my thumbs have always been, it is called Hitchhiker's thumb, it is genetic and about 24-36% of people have it. For some people their thumbs just bends back a tiny bit, for others they bends back a lot. How about you? What kind of thumbs do you have?

I do too. Mine lay flat back and my kids told me my thumbs were broken haha

My friends call me "disgusting" for being able to do this... Mine even bend back more.

All of my fingers can do that.. besides my ring fingers, they don’t bend that much. It looks like my hand was made the wrong way with how much I can bend them.

My classmates sometimes point out how when i try to straighten all my fingers they are not straight it does not hurt whenever i bend them but does when i go a bit too far

I do. It doesn’t go back as far as yours however. I always thought it was normal.

had an accident with my bike where i fell and it "cracked" my right thumb, and now i can do this, not like bend it completely, but i couldn't bend it more than straight and now i can bend it back a bit more, but i can't do that with the other thumb. idk if i should be scared or smth lol, my thumb seems completely fine too

My thumb is bent where it looks like I've bent it getting hurt. It's very strange. I'm not sure if it's a bunion or something like it

Yes mine even more than urs too. Im also double jointed in my fingers and toes so it looks weird when I turn my thumb back and forth.

Mine bend backwards but not forwards which is a handicap when trying to play certain chords😕

Yep I have 'hitch hiker's' thumb too. I'm double jointed in all my fingers, toes, wrists & ankles. The best part is if I step the wrong way & twist my ankle, I'm totally fine😂 It does make freezes in breakdancing more difficult though..

i have only one, i dont like it as my right hand doesnt bend like that giving me a weird feeling of stiffness ro something at the tip of my thumb unlike my hitchhiker left thumb and its weird

What annoys me is for people to insist it must be worse or it hurts. Like, seriously, this was how I was born. I have MORE mobility in my thumb than apparently a majority of people, and it has always been normal or what I thought was normal until the day my biology class taught everyone how genetics works.

Hotdog Thumb is a variant of the hitchhiker thumg that makes the bottom of the thumb turn to exactly 90 degrees with ease, this condition can kinda make it look like your holding your thumb and its really cool

do you have other hyper mobile joints? the thumb joint thing did throw me for a second the first time i noticed it, but I am so not stretchy i cant lay my arm flat at the elbow

I do too!! And more so on my left. I was told it was due to my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (genetic disorder).

I do too. I also have hypermobility or what most people call double jointed.
