Vintage Roland Juno 106

If you want a synthesizer that evokes the sound of the 1980s, the Roland Juno-106 is it. Providing unprecedented patch storage and MIDI connectivity, the 106 was state of the art when it was released in 1984—and it still has a sound not quite like anything else.

The Juno-106 uses a DCO for its core sound generation, providing super-stable and reliable tuning. This combined with its distinctive Roland filter and unmistakable swirling chorus tones earned the 106 a strong place in the history of electronic instruments. Providing stellar pads, warm stabs, and rich, cascading atmospheres, the Juno-106 is perhaps one of the most compelling keyboard synths ever made.

5:46 At that moment, every Playstation owner stood up out of their chair, awaiting the arrival of a chiming white screen.

I’m so glad I bought one these 15 years ago, bought a soldering and desoldering gun, studied the schematics, bought an oscilloscope and managed to bring this beast back to life! Special thanks to the Internets for giving me the necessary info too 🙏🏾

As a teen, I thirsted over the Juno 106 when I saw their advertisements in Keyboard Magazine in the 1980's. I even saw one up close in a music store, where they just got one & they were unboxing it. But the money was too much for me, so never got any. I was a fan of the multi-colored labels on the control chassis, so I emulated that for a synth program I was coding on my C-64 for a highschool project around 1985-86, with the UI on the screen looking like a Juno 60/106, with the colors, buttons, numerica displays & sliders.

The Sound or Juno puts me in such a weird amazing place. Feels like a synthwave world that i miss, tho I've never lived in it. It gives me a feeling of nostalgia over a time that never existed. It's crazy. I'm a bit drunk right now as well

That chorus unit is killer. Thanks for recording it in stereo.

I lucked up and scored one for 275 bucks last year from a pawn shop. Pawn guy said "it's broken", I gladly said "ok, I'll take it". Sheer luck had me moving to Pocatello Idaho (from NC ) recently, which just *happened* to be 40 minutes from one of the handful of Roland tech school graduates/geniuses who can work on these as Roland would. 400 bucks later (recapped and replaced the cmos chip) and she's literally good as new. 675 all in for the best sounding synth I've ever heard !

I picked up an HS60. Same insides but more of a home keyboard outside. Love it and yep, twice the keyboard with that chorus on. :)

I like the format of the video — where he/she doesn`t really try to play too hard, but mostly pressing buttons, tweaking those swithes, showing what does what — and just letting the sound go

I've got one of them, - bought it from a fella in Kensington for £350, Immaculate condition, cosmetically.
.
~ had to pull out the internal battery in the end though, there was a short between the DCO board and battery that kept draining the battery, resulting in wild low freq oscillations of the DCO's. ~

Quality demo btw

These patches are exactly what I love about the 106. Thank you for this excellent demo!

It’s all about the chorus on this, tc electronics do a great analog pedal (June v2) that you can put any synth through to get that sound. Putting a DX7 through it for example is loads of fun

I love the 106! It was my first synth in 1985 and I still have it and use it often. You pretty much can't make a bad sound with it. I also have acquired a Roland MKS-7 which would have been the coolest rack mount synth module ever except it wasn't. Still, it's awesome if you have a 106 to control it with.
