Double Jeopardy!

*** TODAY'S PUZZLE ***

Who better to continue a week of absolutely incredible puzzles than Jay Dyer - a setter who seems to only make 100%-rated sudokus. This one is called Overkill and features "doublers"!

You can try it at the link below:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. Digits in a cage may not repeat, and sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Nine cells (one in each row/column/3x3 box) are "doublers", and count as double their value in cage sums. Each digit appears in exactly one doubler. Doublers are not necessarily in cages.

Yay, thanks for another feature! Sadly I can't take credit for the 3 in the corner, that was a happy accident. I was really pleased with how well this idea came together, and I'm glad you enjoyed solving it.

I LOVED this puzzle, bravo Jay. Thank you for setting and sharing this beauty, and to CTC for featuring it. What a wonderful few weeks of puzzles. It's amazing how the bar for elegance and beauty keeps rising, the setting evolution from the community is inspiring.

The way Simon stopped when he put three in the corner was simply delightful

This was one of the best solves of Simon in my opinion and I really love that you are explaining it so well while solving :)

I actually needed to walk away from this puzzle last night and dream about it. In the morning I awoke with the break in. Well done, loved the concept.

Got to love Simon. I'm not colour-blind, but the two colours I see most frequently complained about are blue and purple. So saying "I won't use purple, I'll use blue instead" is effectively saying "I won't use [blue/purple] I'll use [blue/purple] instead". And then later he decides he WILL use purple as his special colour to indicate doubler cells, even though he has lots of blue cells in the grid already!

His intentions are good, but I'm not sure he has understood the issue.

19:00 What a beautiful logic to explain the reason 1 could not be the doubler in the four cages which sum over 45.

12:11 simon's camera starts to tear up a bit when it realized how difficult the puzzle may be

Q2: Can you do this for another channel?
A2: I've been thinking about that and wrote some code to make that possible. Let me know which channel you think would be a good fit!

Imagine future anthropologists have to figure out why there were so many sudoku puzzles with 3’s in the corner. 😅

There is a little SET-based argument you could do at the start. Highlight Columns 3, 4, 6, 7 and Rows 3, 4, 6, 7. These contain at most eight doublers, and they also cover all four of the big cages. So these four cages contain at most eight doublers. It follows that the digits in the cages must be four lots of 23456789, with each of these digits being a doubler once.

I tend to fare ok with 'under an hour' puzzles on the channel but this one messed with my head - as always was a joy to see the solve!

Never imagined being able to solve 5 star puzzle, did it in 72:00 minutes, after realizing we need to have at least 8 doublers in the cages, finding the doubler cells and how well it worked with only 2 sensible cage totals was difficult. Awesome puzzle. time to watch simon way

Great puzzle, what a run we’ve been on! I loved that little trick with the 78 pair making that one cell a 9 over near the bottom left. Great setting and solving as usual, and way to find the 3 in the corner!

This was great. I felt the way the ancients must have felt when Captain Picard dropped out of the sky and show them how to flambé their brandy with his phaser - what you did with figuring out the initial logic about the doublers was magical. (Oh, was that event not in the series? Well, in my defense, it could have been, right?) Beatiful from start to finish - thank you!!

Very interesting puzzle. I found it very difficult at first and needed a little jump-start from Simon. I really enjoyed solving the puzzle without further support.

Simon, I absolutely love your enthusiasm for these puzzles. However, as a colourblind person I have a minor gripe… you try to avoid bad colour combos but always choose blue and purple which are the absolute worst two colours you can put together 😅

This was a very fun, and creative puzzle.
