Directed by Ron Howard (kind of)

Everyone was shocked when directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were fired four months into shooting the upcoming Star Wars spinoff Solo. In the months since, Ron Howard was brought onboard and as the film's credits will show, is the only person to receive the credit of director. Let's dive in and talk about how that credit ruling was decided and why Howard is the only one credited.

UPDATE (as of June 12, 2018)
It was announced today that Bryan Singer will be the sole director credited for Bohemian Rhapsody. What was stated in the video about Singer not having reached the 90% threshold remains uncontested - by all accounts, he only shot around two-thirds of principal photography. My suspicion (which is completely and purely speculative) is that he lawyered up and lobbied pretty hard for the director credit using the claim that Fox didn't allow him proper time off to care for a sick relative as leverage.

Regardless, I offer my sincerest apologies for the misinformation (getting stuff like this wrong really sucks and I hate it when it happens).

I'm now really interested in seeing what Gareth Edward's Rogue One Director's Cut looked like...

Films benefit so much from being the sole vision of one person. That one person can’t do everything obviously, but I tend to enjoy movies more when the writer and director is the same.

Disney: Hey let’s get these kids’ comedy directors

Disney: Wait why is the movie too funny and not edgy enough?

Moves like this and similar stuff over at Marvel make me fear for creative control in the era of the brand franchise.

I don't know if you're considering re-shoots as post production, but Ron was rumoured to have re-shot between 70/80% of the film (even having to recast the villain). Therefore I think its fair to say that it was a Ron Howard directed film. Even then lets say he only re-shot less than half the film, based off the reviews I've seen so far I don't actually think Lord and Miller would want their names on the film.

It's really great that you keep evolving for your videos essays, by always doing them in a new and creative way.
Even if you don't do millions of views like all the "WhAT Is tHe PRoBlem WiTh SW8" videos, your work is really more qualitative.
Keep going !

Isn't there a way to see Gareth Edwards' director's cut??? I wanna see what TERRIFIED Disney..

From what I've heard from reading and also talking to someone involved, Ron Howard re-shot a very large percentage of the stuff Lord and Miller directed, using the same script. The original directors were apparently failing to get decent coverage and asking the actors to improvise a lot, and it wasn't going well.

Also on Rogue One, I know you didn't say this butt many people seem to think Gareth was fired and replaced by Tony Gilroy (not a good director), which is simply not true. And according to Lucasfilm, this was said after he was brought on board to help with reshoots (just like he was on Godzilla also directed by Gareth Edwards), "Gilroy will have as much as a say in the finished product as Edwars" and by everything I've seen, Gareth still did more than him.

Yes but how much of Lord and Miller's work was kept? As I understood it much of what they shot was redone. If that's the case then wouldn't it be considered significantly more than 25%?

I am honestly still bitter about this. No disrespect to Howard, but I wanna see the Lord/Millar version of this.

Even though Lord and Millers version may not have been what Disney wanted it would have been interesting to see their version of a Star Wars movie considering humour is a big part of Star Wars

You do know Ron Howard spent months reshooting principle photography right? Hardly any of the original footage will be used.

Imagine not firing the directiors when the first few drafts of the script comes out. Not when the final draft comes out. Not when pre prodcution is done. Not when they shot 10 or 20. No 75. fucking 75. what the hell was this woman thinking.
