What does "absorb" mean? Russia and Belarus have long signed a union treaty. In fact, this is one state, the only difference is that Lukashenka has the right to independently conduct foreign policy. It's not even news.

I'm no expert on strategic affairs but as a person with common sense can say this. Belarus and Russia are now close, infact cooperating in this war. So as an adversary and as a media giant that the West is, controlling information and narrative worldwide, what would one do? Try to split or make fractures in the relationship. How straight forward! Who is this leaker of info exactly? What would Russia gain by invading Belarus which has now as a seperate entity houses nukes on its soil for Russia? I mean it is potentially taking a nuke hit for defending Russia! Why would anyone need to annex it for?
