I've been looking for videos like this these days, and there you are posting one that sums it up nicely, thanks! I've started Cuban salsa myself, first year beginner but highly motivated and with a good sense of rythm, yet I find myself in a connundrum.

I chose Cuban salsa because the "ideas", the history (the fact that it's the roots of all salsa) and probably the moves as well as the human part of it attracted me more than slot/line/NY/... salsa, but I recently also discovered that my favourite salsa tracks... are mostly Puerto Rican or American! Probably because my first musical passion before anything else was and still is Afro-American music, from jazz to funk and soul.

So they're supposed to be different music genres and not just different dances, yet I can't find a single video or text that explains thoroughly the difference! So my question is: could you explain the MUSICAL differences between "nations" in another video or something? And also: is it possible to dance "Cuban salsa" (casino or social) on non-Cuban salsa music? Whether it be Columbian, Puerto Rican, Venezuelian, etc.

And depending on the dance partner skill level, it's possible to switch back and forth between the two styles.

Cuban style is much easier to lead a girl who doesn't know much salsa . LA style you can't fake

I like on1 better than on2. Does that mean I’m dancing NY style?

Also you dance on different beats. It's easier to pick up Cuban since you dance on the first beat while NY is on the second (or sixth depending on how you see it).

Cuban style dancers are disliked on dance floors that danced new York style. Because they took up so much space and are generally oblivious to other dancers. Theyay bumped into them or stepped on their foots

Cuban salsa is not just about dancing in circles. It is a more complex dance than linear salsa.
You have been misinformed!
