DeMar DeRozan is singlehandedly keeping that 2 point jumpshot percentage up by himself!

I’m a baseball guy, not a basketball guy, but I love analytics. The same issue exists in both sports: boring things drive winning (walks, strike outs, and home runs in baseball; 3s in basketball). They’re good strategy. The best teams do lots of the boring things. You have to figure out how to balance the game better to incentivize more active and entertaining things. Baseball hasn’t really figured out how to do that, yet, but maybe basketball can.

Also on the side note, shooting 3 is less physical than attacking the rim, meaning players are less likely to get injuries.

The real limit is when viewership and interest will start to seriously decline because people will have had enough of games without actual basketball and when they stop buying subscriptions, merchandise, etc, the league will react.

11:30 this is what the warriors discovered before everyone else. While the Warriors dynasty is know for their 3s and "changing the game", they didn't go overboard like other teams started to. In those years, there were other teams that caught on to the "3 point avalanche" meta who shot more 3s than the warriors. The difference was that the Warriors didnt actually over compensate. They didnt shoot the most 3s those seasons when they won. They still shot a lot in the mid range and had curry in p&r and back door actions for other players because of the space 3s opened up.

I genuinely think this is why Giannis, Jokic, Embiid have had so much joy in and around the paint, they have the whole team waited outside the arc for a 3😂

To be fair, in the Celtics vs Knicks game they were 1 three-pointer away from breaking the record for most in a game. That’s one reason they were just chuckin em up for fun.

It's all downstream from removing hand checking. Bring it back, and balance will be restored.

In high school (13-16 years old), I was already in love with the midrange. It was so difficult back then to do a midrange shot because it felt like inside the 3-point line was just too suffocating. Fast forward to now (I'm 37), and I am utterly surprised at how easy it is to get to my midrange spot and just shoot without being contested. Buckets baby! 😂

5:10 As I recall, Boston was 1 three pointer shy from breaking the all time 3-point record in one match, so it’s not so shocking that they were pulling them in every possible way just to break the record

You should do a video on fouls. Because that's how I'm viewing the NBA now.

Three ball, foul, foul, commercial, three ball, foul, three ball, commercial, foul, foul, foul

Back in the day, I figured out how to consistently hit 3s in NBA Live and i just played like that whenever my friends came over. I would smoke them every time because i was just making 3 after 3. But I was always under the impression that yeah this is why videogames are videogames and real life is real life. There's no way you can sustain that style of play over an 82 game season plus the playoffs. It was silly videogame shit. That is what's so mindblowing about Steph Curry and the subsequent 3 point revolution. It took what was essentially a videogame strategy and made it viable. Not just viable but the norm. 'Defense wins championships' still rings true, but 3s are what get you over the hump now. Whether or not that's a good thing remains to be seen but it doesn't get spoken of enough how truly transcendent Steph Curry is and continues to be. What he and the Warriors started in 2015 should've never happened. It was unfathomable back in the day. They completely redefined convention within the game of basketball and I dont think there's any other player who can lay claim to that distinction. Jordan is forever the goat. Kobe was an icon. Lebron continues to defy father time. But none of them can say that they altered the very fabric of the game they played. Only Steph. That's a Goat case if I ever did see one

About ten or twelve years ago, there was some college basketball team that broke records for points scored. They had one designated shooter whose only job was to chuck three pointers. Every other player on the team would just play full court pressure defense. Their whole game plan was to either steal the ball in backcourt, contest any opposing three pointer and let the other team get a layup if they wanted it, so they could get the ball back as quickly as possible and get their designated shooter in a position to put up a 3. They ran their entire roster, played all 15 players on that all game full court press, and their designated shooter ended up breaking records scoring like a hundred points in a game. I've wondered for years now if an NBA team might adopt that crazy strategy...and now we see the warriors of this season going 12 deep to play super intense defense with fresh legs... sure has me wondering...

The problem with this is everyone and their grandma are chucking up 3pts. There are simply some players that have 0 business shooting outside the arc. Remember Curry and company that made it popular are ELITE shooters. Often immitated, but never duplicated!!

This is an amazing video. The data visualizations are beautiful. The analysis is thorough and insightful. The histogram of shot vs distance overlaid on the court was just, chefs kiss. Keep it, your data analysis and visualization skills are getting better and better.

The three point is kind of like the invention of the spear, attacking from range is better and allows for more opportunities like second chance points

I think 50/50 would have to be the true sweet spot because defensively there will always at the threat of a three, but never a definite, causing you to have to split defensive schemes to cover either option, leaving every possession to attack the more open look.
