Kurt didn't invent grunge, nor has he claimed to. Other seattle-based bands at the time were also in the scene, Nirvana just became the biggest of them all, and people falsley attribute the credit to him now. Not to downplay his music, I'm personally a huge fan, he just didn't invent the genre, just brought it into the spotlight.
