Rafa Nadal Forehand Secret Revealed
The buggy whip forehand is arguably one of the best shots of Rafael Nadal. He has used the forehand to dominate most of his opponents over the last decade, and win multiple majors.

In this forehand lesson, Jeff Salzenstein breaks down the Rafael Nadal buggy whip forehand. He reveals the technical and strategic secrets that can help you master this amazing shot.

Jeff has seen many junior, club, and even professional tennis players who have the wrong technique on the buggy whip forehand. They tend to swing up and finish on the same side of your body. This can cause major injuries on your shoulder in the long run, as well as prevent you from hitting your forehand with the maximum amount of power and spin possible.

Extension is the main key to master Rafael Nadal’s buggy whip forehand. You must extend out to the target, before it comes back around to the same side of the body.

There are many places on the court where Nadal uses his buggy whip forehand. Jeff reveals four specific scenarios, where you can implement this shot.

Use #1: Forehand cross-court:

If you’re a left, you have the advantage to go right at your opponent’s backhand. If you’re a righty, you can still use this shot to pull your opponent’s off the court.

Use #2 Forehand down the line:

This is quite an effective shot to change directions, and surprise your opponents.

Use #3 Running forehand:

The buggy whip forehand is the best option to deal with wide balls when you’re on the run. Pete Sampras made this buggy whip forehand on the run famous

Use #4 Approach shot:

If you get a short ball, you can use the buggy whip and advance to the net. This is a great way to take the ball early and be aggressive.

When you’re under pressure and the ball is coming fast, you can consider using the buggy whip forehand.

The buggy whip approach shot and down the line ideas makes so much sense. It keeps your momentum while you approach and provides an extra room for error due to the heavy spin. Thanks Jeff!

Everyone talks about the power of this technique. Hardly anyone talks about the consistency of it! This is a brilliant technique for staying in a rally. DEUCE for righty and AD for lefty.

Always helpful. I can't wait to try this...on the run forehands are very difficult for me but this video should help.

Excellent video I don’t have this weapon on my arsenal it’s something definitely for practice in the future is they ever open the tennis courts...

Never been a fan of high-charged forehands, but I must 1) give credit to this video with explaining the buggy whip "correct way" also to avoid injuries (ask Masha for advices) and 2) admit that this shot is extremely handy and instinctive when you are pushed back and, when having to retrieve a deep-angle ball, may help you to counterpunch your opponent.
Gotta give it a shot... "the correct way"

Wow man, really liked it very much. Although due to covid-19, cannot apply it practically but yes it makes a sheer sense the way you are asking to apply it. I mean hopefully i might be able to turn my forehend to bazooka with this.

Great stuff! Thanks!
Have you read the guidelines the USTA came out with for playing tennis with COVID-19? Do you think this will be possible to pull off? Withe the 6 foot distancing guideline it sounds like doubles is not recommended. Unless you play singles, it seems that just hitting and practicing will be the norm.

I havent ever practised "buggy whip" (first time I heard it has a name in this video) but sometimes it just comes naturally. I think it comes when thats the only way to get a good hit in that certain situation when it just comes without any meaning/thinking of hitting like that.

Hey Jeff when I understand correctly I have to go more on the outside of the ball than over the ball is that correct?

Great tips! I wish you could have shown some of these tips in slow motion though. Thanks

Hi Jeff, you forgot to mention that using it to hit the low slicing ball, as you said before.

This shot is useful when you're late on the ball and can't make contact in the area that allows a normal swing that wraps around the body.

Hi Jeff, which grip are you using here, is it still semi-western as for "normal" forehand, or do you go further towards full-western grip?

I think there is a lot happening on the back swing, it's like a lion's tamer whip, there's a drop and a lag and then whack!!
