As we delve deeper into history, we uncover the significance of the B-36 Peacemaker, designed during World War II and built for one mission: delivering nuclear weapons for the Strategic Air Command. Its colossal size and impressive 40,000-kilogram payload made it an aviation marvel.

However, the advent of the jet age posed a threat. The race for air dominance between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was on, with jet propulsion taking center stage. Yet, jets had a drawback – increased fuel consumption, limiting their range. This presented a dilemma: how to protect the B-36 on its long-range missions?

Discover the ingenious solution – the XF-85 Goblin, a peculiar-looking, potato-shaped parasite fighter designed to be carried within the B-36's bomb bays. Learn about its foldable wings, vertical stabilizers, and the magic of its docking hook that allowed it to rejoin the mothership after its mission.

Follow the Goblin's journey from design to testing, including the heart-pounding moments of its first flight and daring mid-air docking attempts. Uncover the challenges faced by test pilot Edwin Schoch and the hopes pinned on this tiny fighter.

In the end, learn why the XF-85 Goblin, despite its promise, met its demise due to performance issues and the emergence of aerial refueling technology. Could it have been the start of a new era of flying aircraft carriers?

I first saw this at the Dayton Air Force museum 45 years ago.
It's one of the few that's still fresh in my mind..

One problem, how to retrieve back the planes? Now it is possible with advance drone technology. It difficult and dangerous to retrieve back as shown in the later video.

only question, it looks like the goblin takes up the entire bomb bay, bombers are worthless if the goblin takes up the entire bomb bay

Now they'll deploy remote fighter drones

I can't believe the Goblin test pilots didn't beat the shit out the designers for reckless endangerment and complete engineering malfeasance.
