The Remains Of Caligula's Secret 'Pleasure Boat' Were Found In NYC

It's good to be the king - or the emperor. Pleasure, power, and extreme wealth often come with the job. The exploits of Caligula are legendary, and he even took those activities to the water when he built two luxurious party ships and parked them on Lake Nemi near Rome.

The Lake Nemi ships were intentionally sunk during the second half of the first century and were finally recovered during the 1930s. Artifacts from the ships went to a museum in Italy but many items were destroyed in World War II. Recently, a mosaic from one of the ships turned up in New York City, proving all is not lost for Caligula's sex ships, but it does raise interesting questions as to how it got there.

Imagine using a piece of furniture for almost half a century only to find it was from a Roman fuck boat

That kind of pisses me off about the museum being blown up. I know Caligula wasn't the best person but he's still a part of history and to have those pieces of his ships ruined makes me kind of mad.

I just gotta say: John Hurt as Caligula in "I, Claudius" is one of the most brilliant performances put to film. Seriously.

What would I do with a piece of that boat? I’d shine a UV light on it.

"An irresistible mix of art and genitals" also describes the baroque period.

I completely forgot that Malcolm McDowell played Caligula, bringing that A Clockwork Orange energy.

And Caligula is without question one of the most unique films in movie history! A true one-of-a-kind classic! When it opens with him reading the speech declaring him a god, you know you're in for something. It's one of those rare movies that somehow transcends the criteria of "good" and/or "bad" and goes beyond into it's own realm and the story of it's production is legendary.

Caesar: His name became the translation of the Ruler of the World in the West.
Caligula: His name ended up becoming associated with murderers with mental illness.

I cant imagine what it would be like to live to tell the tale of living under a ruler as crazy as Caligula

I remember when I watched Caligula a few years ago (I was 27, and I had no idea what kind of movie I was getting into) and I say today what I said then, no one, and I mean NO ONE did Caligula better than Malcom McDowell, I can't imagine anyone else doing it the justice than Malcom did.

There was a private club in Atlantic City named Caligula’s Temple. I always wondered what went on in there

Ah to live in those times the parties sound fun. Knowing my luck i would have been a slave or a eunuch.

My late husband would have loved the back story of a table like that and would have laughed every time someone asked about it. Love this channel.

I remember hearing a theory that early in his rule he was a good emperor but he then suffered an illness or disease that nearly killed him. And after he recovered he’s was more erratic and impulsive.

"For anybody not a priest horse, Caligula was a terrible guy"...understatement of the century?
