Fairly new tier here - thanks for all the the great videos! I had tied some of these a few months back and got the opportunity to clean up during a hatch (in CO) last night. This pattern is deadly!

Mathews ties it differently to ensure the wing stands up properly. After tying in the deer hair, he then props the deer hair up using wraps through the deer hair. He separates the wing into threes and passes the thread through the deer hair and then creates a small dam on the front. After this, he ties in the zelon tail and wing, finishes the body, and then dubs around the wing with some superfine dubbing. Mathews tells a story about how one night he tied them much as shown here to time them faster, and in the morning almost all of the wings were facing forward in some way, somewhat over the eye. While they probably worked -- I'm reminded of Ed Engle who calls all of his failed flies cripples -- Mathews apparently didn't find them as effective. If you chat with Mathews too, he puts a huge, huge emphasis on the deer hair used. You need hair that is small and yet still hollow. The good stuff, if you will, barely spins. I guess it shows the sparkle dun, while effective and apparently simple, can be a fly with tons of nuance in the eyes of its creator.

hey man quick question, where do you get that UV resin you have with the tiny applicator and little pen-like UV light? Any help appreciated.

So, if you can't find "midge gray", what color of z-lon would be closer? Light gray? Dun? Regular gray?
