My wife has an X. Her mom has a stroke a couple years later and is wheelchair bound. These doors make it way easier to help her shimmy into the rear seat!

This is the kind of content that allows Tesla to grow their brand without looking like an advertisement.

4 years with a MX and not a single falcon door mechanical failure, that is truly incredible. And deserves recognition. That being said, if the vehicle was available without them we’d have bought another MX without hesitation. For us they were a constant PITA, the sensors frequently stopped the doors from opening fully if the vehicle was dirty, if the sky was too sunny, if the rain was too heavy, or some days for no discernible reason. The rain in particular was a problem as the roof coverage over both aft seats is incorporated into the “wing”, leaving you and the seat drenched while waiting for the doors to transit in both directions. Fun while it’s lasted, overall a very good experience.

That prelim design was unhinged. . . . (Well, you know what I mean!)

thats awesome to see. the early days of prototyping and building of the iconic doors. i live in an area where you dont see many model X or S's so its still exciting to see when i get to look at a model x up close doing its thang

I own a X and absolutely love my wings. Its so much fun picking up my 13 year old ar school and raising the wings when he gets in. Every one and I mean every still looks and says how cool is that!

This is sick! But for a manufacturer so obsessed with efficiency, I'm curious why they chose this? Simply because it's cool, or is it also practical in some way?

The robotic sound of the Model X doors closing reminds me of the robot assistants in Iron Man 1 ❤️

I worked at a place that made some of the prototypes for these. Was fun to program :)

I wish they had kept the original 120” wheelbase. Combined with the falcon wing doors, it allowed direct access to the 3rd row. Plus there was enough leg room for all 3 rows.

I love how the original prototype was practically a DMC 12 gullwing door with pneumatic pistons.

I'm interested to know how the load stresses from the pillars are transferred to whatever the structural member is called that runs along the center of the roof line. I remember lots of cars from the 80s with t-tops that would constantly get tweaked, preventing you from removing or reinstalling the T-tops. Camaros were famous for this. That and leaking. The car would literally begin sagging in the middle, thus closing the Gap in the roof preventing removal or installation of T-tops. There was also a problem with these cars having windshield cracks that would start at the top of the a-pillar. Something about the load needing to be transferred to the center brace in the roof cause cracking in the windshield. I would love a little tiny bit of engineering detail on how Tesla braced the chassis to prevent this phenomenon that is so well known to us in the automotive industry. Other questions include, was there a weight savings or cost with this design. Also, how much does the door protrude out from the side of the vehicle? What is the overall width of the vehicle with both doors open to their widest point?
