The big difference between the Oculus Link cable and most 3rd party cables is, that the Link cable is optic fibre which is extremely fast and reliable and does not need shielding, although you need to be careful, since optical cables can break much easier.

Visual quality is not directly related to the cable quality, because it's a digital signal. If the connection is not stable you will usually get framedrops or loss of connection. The visual quality is defined through the Quest resolution settings as well as the bitrate, which is set automatically. The default bitrate isn't that high and since the encoding is done in H264 a higher bitrate should be set in the Oculus Debug tool.Usually about 250Mbps is fine, even in the highest Resolution the Quest 2 is capable of. In sim racing games you may go for 300Mbps and you won't see any blurry images or artefacts (depending on the resolution of course).

Also all Radeon cards do have pretty awful hardware encoding, so you may need to set the bitrate even higher, at least for high resolutions. The encoding itself does only have a minor impact on quality or speed, since GPUs can handle this quite easy in background routines. Nevertheless, there is additional GPU time needed, so if you set the Quest 2 resolution to the same resolution as e.g. a Rift (this is not the screen resolution per eye due to the barrel distortion) the GPU load will be about 3-5% more.

if you have framedrops, this is directly related to your PC and the resolution/refresh rate and not the cable itself. Your USB connection speed of 2.3Gbps (not GHz) should be fast enough to handle 500Mbps.

Genuinely great video with no 'SUBSCRIBE TO ME' and straight to the point. Also not to mention, very informitave.

I had purchased the AMVR cable initially, but it was noticeably thick, and weighted, as you mentioned. So I grabbed a USB C to USB C cable from Cable Matters on Amazon (Canada) and it was much lighter, and nimble akin to the original cable. In case anyone is looking for another alternative.

I use a WiRO-Tech cable, that goes to my motherboard's Type-C port. Not as long as AMVR's, but I can attest it DOES work quite well. $29.99US right now, and worth it for being less than half of the offiical optical cable.

ive gone through 2 aftermarket cables and my second one is currently going through disconnection issues on both my desktop, and laptop... Link is AGGRIVATING. Constant disconnection issues(especially if you have an amd gpu). Im about to snap and buy an official... If the official isnt working either, idk what im gonna do... Already pissed cuz now its gonna take even longer to save for a 30 series card upgrade... pain

May I ask Jason how is the battery life while using the offical link cable does it actually charge the quest then as I've been using the Anker one but even after 2 hours and half ish my quest to would die. I would like to not have to the next day to realise I need to charge it again before playing.

Now I’m not and expert, and I will never buy an oculus product so I’m not an expert, but if you where having performance issues it might be your computer. What where the specs of the build?
