Here's What Columbia, South Carolina Looks Like These Days

Columbia has a super pretty downtown!

For this edition of dashboard tours, I took I-20 east from Atlanta and headed to Columbia, the capital of the great state of South Carolina. It was a beautiful morning - it had rained the night before, but on this day, the sky was shining bright, pal. It was 9:45 on Saturday, January 9, 2021.

Columbia has a population of 135,000 people, making it just about tied with Charleston as South Carolina’s largest city. It’s growing, but not very quickly. It’s an old city - founded in 1854. The infrastructure here was old for a long time, but revitalization began in the 90s, as old warehouses and dilapidated buildings were replaced with artsy places and restaurants and shopping and condos and other mixed use buildings. Jobs wise, it’s steady, not booming. There are a decent number of health care, manufacturing and banking jobs in the area.

Here’s the rest of downtown Columbia, South Carolina.

My daughters live in SC.. It's nice to see that Columbia is busy with construction, with clean streets and maintained landscaping..!!

I stay about 30 to 40 minutes in Fairfield County. And Columbia is BEAUTIFUL inside and out.

This is my hometown. Columbia is your basic medium sized capital city, and after staying here for a while it becomes basic. Housing is cheaper than other states if you decide to retire here maybe one place you may consider. As far as entertainment or shopping you are better off going to bigger cities like Charlotte or Atlanta. Columbia literally replants it retail stores and restaurants everytime they build a new development on another side of town and leaves other sides of town vacant so be prepared to drive way on the other side, and it is pretty hot in the summer.

I have lived in Columbia all of my life. One of my paternal great great grandfathers settled here in 1892 and part of the family have been here ever since. I have grandchildren growing up here. I love Columbia. Thank you for posting this well-filmed video. Warms my heart!!

Too bad you didn't go out to the lake. Lake Murray is one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever been to. The best thing about Columbia, away from downtown, is that the people here are extraordinarily nice. I am originally from Virginia, but went to USC for grad school, and always wanted to come back. I live out on the lake, and can be in Charlotte, Charleston, Atlanta, Asheville for day trips. It's amazing. Thanks for posting this video, we all love the work you do bringing real places to life.

This guy has it all figured out! Taking trips all over and writing them off as a business expense. I love it! I have an upcoming trip to Columbia at the end of the month so it's helpful to be able to get a lay out before hand. Especially of the traffic so I know what I'm going into. Loved the video!

The long brick building on the corner @ 1:00 used to be where they printed Confederate dollars. Now it’s a Publix.

We stay in Columbia knew where you were the whole time. Surprise more people didn’t pass you if you were really driving this slow lol. Our drivers are inpatient here.

My hometown I’ve lived near for 18 years till about a month ago, where I moved to the Upstate for college. Pretty nice city, it’s been steadily improving for over a decade now. Love to see you covering my city Nick!

Went to Basic Training and AIT at Jackson and that's exactly what I used to do on our passes, I'd go to the airport, rent a car, and just drive around. Granted I know I probably wasn't supposed to but I turned 35 when I was in AIT, I was a big boy.

It resembles Calgary, empty and clean. Though I guess nowhere near as cold, which is a HUGE plus!

Yes Columbia is a beautiful place. It can be very dangerous too. I was outside a restaurant. A man knocked me down and took off with my cellphone.

Its a great place to live it you like a quiet life in a place where the people are friendly the shopping could be a little better but there are still good places to shop and if you want more shopping Charlotte is an hour away but who want to do in depth shopping in person everyday or time they shop when there is Amazon and online shopping that comes to your love my hometown and wouldn't trade it for have lived in Charlotte for a short while and it was nice but it wasn't is a place you will love or not and I like that about it because I like places people and things that have their own charm and not so much things that EVERYBODY do just because.
