NEW! Custom Autumn WATERCOLOUR palette | set up and swatching (2021)

Hi Guys!

In this video I show you how I set up a seasonal watercolour autumn palette. I show you all the colours I selected and talk a bit about why I picked the individual colours too. Making a custom watercolour palette is so much fun and gives you the flexibility to choose the colours you like depending on what you already own, your personal preferences and also the subjects you like to paint. For my autumn palette I went for a real mixture of colours and brands- most of which I already had, but there are a few new ones in there that I'm excited to share with you too. A custom palette should inspire and excite you and this one certainly has me excited to paint so I hope you enjoy watching the process!

Thank you so much for watching,
Take care
Sarah xx

This is a very inspiring palette mix, watched this after watching the squirrel painting. The leaf shaped swatches were perfect. Happy autumn in 2022, as well. Thank you also for all the extra info you always provide about colour mixing ideas.🧡

I think Aureolin yellow PY40 is the perfect yellow. I have found it the least staining of all the transparent yellows. But it does change color to a brownish hue when exposed to daylight. So color isn’t permanent. But wonderful for sketch books.

Loved It Sarah and some great choices. I'm impressed by the granulation of the Sodalite, it looks like it would be great for shadows in woodland. Thanks very much.x

Beautiful palette and swathes 🧡🍁🍂🌻 Rose Madder genuine is a natural fugitive pigment made from the roots of the madder plant, pigment NR9 manufactured by Winsor & Newton is a soft granulating rose similar in hue to Quinacridone Rose. Aureolin PY40 is also fugitive but some fugitive pigments are very beautiful and hard to replicate, it’s nice to try them and see if the hue alternatives are similar. Jane Blundell's blog has swathes and pigment information of most watercolours and is a great resource

I really want to start making my own seasonal and holiday themed palettes. This was so great to watch!

Beautiful colors for you new mini palette. It's so fun having little palettes to pull out and it helps keep colors limited.

I love browns mixed from transparent orange and a purple. I usually use Dioxazine, but the Perylene might work🙂

I love the leaf swatch sheet! I even got one from Denise Soden when she was trying to bring some fun to swatching in her videos and viewers asked her to sell them from her Etsy page. They are long gone but I believe that I may have a digital file for re-printing. I enjoyed your leaves too! I have used the laminate idea before too and you can even use it as an extra mixing area for small amounts of paint. I am looking forward to seeing your autumnal artwork in a future video! Here’s hoping we see a UK centric landscape soon! Til next time, be safe and enjoy your day!

I love these colors! I have cad red deep by QOR but it looks nothing like this. Mine is a flat unappealing red, neither warm or cool, just, ugh.

RS hematite violet is one of my absolute favourites. The way it's such an opaque Mars violet with so little effort, but washes out into a speckled grey/purple/brown with so much variation and texture makes me so very happy. I really like the look of DS Sodalite but I suspect I could mix something very close myself with a heavily granulating PBk11 and one of my many blues. I have that problem with a lot of the Primateks though, they're very pretty but so easily duped with a bit of mixing that I can't justify their price. They are enjoyable to watch being swatched though!

I bought Daniel Smith's Rose Madder Permanent after reading Jean Dobie's book and from what I gather it's very close to a match to the real deal (although the WN Rose Madder Genuine apparently smells like roses?). Transparent, gentle granulation/flocculation, and non staining. Mixes really nicely with Viridian and Cobalt Blue. For Aureolin, I prefer to use something like Winsor Yellow (that pigment can be found in most artist grade brands) or Sennelier Yellow Light (a bright slightly buttery and slightly cool yellow).

I love nature inspired browns. To be honest I have way to many but can never resist to buy me a burnt umber from each brand or translucent browns in general. Its ridiculous and I should make me a full palette of the ones I have just to go hahaha on myself. Brands of brown in my stash are white nights, sennelier schmincke and ofcourse ds. I adore the variations between different sienna's while having it contained to one pigment. Like a little colonial palette on itself. I would love to have your light ochre added. As normal ochers tend to be more opaque wich I hate so I mainly use a raw sienna instead.

I think rose madder genuine is made of real rose madder and have almost no lightfastnes but rose madder permanent is a blend to look like genuine rose madder but still keeping lightfastness.

How many colours, max, to a palette? I have my first 120 in various lists on eBay! lol

I'm planning on updating my watercolours to winsor and newton professional. You cant get any other good quality paints here such as daniel smith white knights shimanke etc. I heard that w&n browns are bad. Does mixing your own brown help?
