John Lymberopoulos of SyncLab Media interviews Chris Attig of the Attig Law Firm in Dallas, Texas about the importance of using a VA accredited attorney when veterans are pursuing a benefits compensation claim.
"Chris, why is it important for an attorney to be accredited in VA disability and VA benefit law?"
"The law requires right now, John, that a veteran, who wants to hire an attorney, hire an accredited VA attorney. If you're out there looking for an attorney to help you in your VA disability compensation claim it's really important that you find an attorney who's been especially accredited by the VA to help you handle that claim, otherwise they're not experienced or qualified enough to help you with your case."
"What do find is the greatest challenge that these veterans go through?"
"Working with the VA. There's some great people in the VA, there's some really hard workers. A lot of veterans themselves go to work with the VA, but it is a cumbersome bureaucracy and so a lot of veterans have difficulty navigating that bureaucracy with or without an attorney sometimes. So, it's important to have an attorney that's experienced with that bureaucracy that will help them find their way through all of that red tape."
"Do most veterans understand their VA benefits and understand the process to go through to make those claims?"
"John, that's a great question. I served from 1993 to 2004 and it wasn't until years after I got out that I understood veterans benefit compensation claims. I didn't know that I was eligible for some VA benefits until long after I left the service. most veterans, and particularly most veterans survivors, are not aware of the benefits available to them or how to prosecute a claim for those benefits."
"So, certainly a complex process when it comes to veterans benefits. You need to find someone who is an accredited attorney to best represent you, the veterans themselves make sure they find the right legal representation to matriculate through that maze of compensation, benefits and claims."
"Absolutely, and that's two things that our firm does. A lot of times we use that accreditation to represent veterans and their surviving spouses in the course of a veterans benefits claim. We also use our experience to provide more information and power to more veterans in more ways through our veterans law blog through our Facebook, Google Plus and LinkedIn pages. We provide e-books to veterans and their surviving spouses to help them understand this process in the event they don't want to hire an attorney or don't want to work with a VSO. They have the option of doing it themselves, and we give them some of the knowledge about that process to be able to do those things on their own."
