Not to forget them eating EVERYTHING they will find on the floor. O.o

You're spot on with the exercise. My beagle is still a young pup, but a quick little walk around the block (about all he can tolerate in the cold Canadian winter) is more of a warm up than actual exercise. Finishing a walk just means "OK DAT FUN TIME FOR THREE HOURS OF FETCH PLAY FETCH FOR THREE HOURS PLS."

We had a beagle that we called a defective beagle. Don’t get me wrong, she was super sweet and was extremely patient. The reason why we called her defective was because she was super quiet, was really good on the leash, not very high energy (actually she slept most of the time), and wasn’t easily distracted. She was a super sweet girl.

The eating ethic is super high. Mine eats everything and as I've come to learn the pavement buffet is ALWAYS open

There are no bad things about beagles! They are perfect. This said by the woman who has had beagles her entire life and right now has one staring at her lovingly!

I’ve always had beagle mixes. My current dog is a purebred. She is happy with one good long walk a day and several small potty breaks. She goes to the dog park a couple times a week, doesn’t like other dogs, doesn’t have good recall and does bark once or twice at night but that’s mostly it. And of course she eats everything in sight. Beagles aren’t for a first time dog owner but they make great companions.

A beagle was our family dog and a huge part of my childhood. All those things are true!! Loved him a lot, but he drove us nuts many times haha

I have a beagle she is a rescue from my local shelter. 9 and a half years old has the energy level of a puppy even with several long walks, bad recall so I never let her outside off a leash or outside a fence, escape artist and would take off and steals food/drink out of cups/gets into the trash (which is why I will only let my mom watch her), is a major jumper, howls all the time when she’s happy or wants something 😂 so sweet though loves people and other dogs and even cats. And I love her.

My beagles recall is bad, the howling is actually almost never. But his resource guarding is horrific, i’ve never had a dog with this problem before and i’m finding it so difficult to deal with.

my husband just recently saved a beagle walker mix from the woods (almost starved to death), we've had him for about about week and he's been pretty good, I don't know his age but I'd guess 3 years from how he acts, he's not super active but he's still active and he's good around our children with supervision and he's good around a small pup we got right before my husband brought the beagle home

My work line scent hunting Beagle, Seven (of Nine), turned 5 months old a few days ago.
I've been pairing balanced dog training at a local trainer to increase the level of distraction in a controlled environment with 100% of the teachings in the Puppy Training Course from Fenrir Canine Leaders / Will Atherton.
The result is that I have a few neighbors with beagles that are way older coming to me asking how on Earth was I able to achieve 0 howling, loose leash walking or standing in a field surrounded by squirrels with Seven not even flinching.
The answer is that you put in the HARD work! You must be consistent, day by day, training session by training session.
In the last couple of weeks, I've been able to even call her out of off-leash playtime with other dogs, not 100%, but she's starting to get it.
Is she perfect? Far from it! In the short term there's more and more training, every single day. In the long term, I'll start with the ecollar training.
Thanks Will!
I wish I was in the UK to work with you directly.

We had s beagle for 17 years from when I was a kid and gotta say that we never experienced any of these. We did experience escaping to doggie park though. And also eating EVERYTHING which became a problem once she ate some poisoned stuff that someone left for stray cats (yeah, ppl are idiots). Since then, we never let her out without a muzzle. I presume that’s a pretty common trait with beagles because for example Melbourne airport has beagle as a food sniffing dog to prevent ppl from bringing in the banned foods lol.

Wow that was very enjoyable! I have a Beagle, LOUD howls extremely! They are everything you say! I am very fortunate with mine. after over 25 years of Labs, Winnie is one of the very best Dogs. Because of information like yours, he is never set-up for failure!

I was blessed to have adopted a “defective” beagle pup, doesn’t howl or bark, will sleep in bed for up to 12+ hours because she loves cuddling, and as long as you have a paper bag with a couple chips in it, she could be a half a kilometer away and simply calling her name and shaking the bag has her burning rubber to come back to you.

Edit:she’s also a healthy weight of 25 pounds, she was the runt of her litter, so she’s a bit smaller than your usual 15inch (at the shoulder) beagle. She’s 5 and basically the highlight of family and the celebrity amongst the young children in the neighborhood.

My senior beagle is very vocal, very stubborn and very attached and I wouldn’t trade him for anything

I had a beagle he never howled not once in his life he would bay but not howl or bark. He had a decent recall and could be off leash in most situations loved agility and exercise and loved to please people he wasn’t that affectionate and didn’t love to be touched but he was a good boy. (Later in life he became a tripaw) even with only 3 legs at the age of 9-11 he wanted to go for walks and exercise even if physically he was less capable. I would say after you explained what can go terribly wrong I hit the jackpot with my beagle. ❤🐾

My sister had a beagle and God, this is so true. They loved the dog, and when I visited them, i truly got to know why they were annoyed by him. Always barking, super distracted and everything. I once ran around w him for 40 minutes and he was roaring to go 😭
