He may have been a hothead who invested too much time in his DF, but people need to put some respek on Ace's name, he's called weak far too much. Not only does he have this feat, but he popped his CoC cherry at age 10, was the last man standing against Jinbei at a young age, highest bounty known to us until after Dressrosa, not to mention got offered a Shichibukai position at such an early age in his piracy. This guy is Roger's son and didn't even reach his peak yet when he died, not to mention he died covering for Luffy too.

Ace is very strong ! Not far, not near Admiral level, he was hungry, tired and got beated by BlackBeard. Oda did some mistakes with the development of Ace and haki in general because it wasn't so concrete at all before time-skip, not even shown when used, he knew Haki it's sure. He knew it was Conqueror haki when Luffy uses it and said " You too.. " and he was able to touch Akainu ! Ace has mastered his devil fruit perfectly, it was confirmed in the novel he knows haki, Oda killed Ace because he is a better canditate to be the pirate king. He is the son of the pirate king, he is a D, he would be too strong if he stayed alive and even cause some serious problems for Luffy's dream even if he doesn't want to be the pirate king, the destiny and the fate would follow him.

Edit (spoilers) : We know right now he is as strong as Yamato who is herself as strong has 1/2 Kaido right now and can hold her own against Kaido for a long time. So yeah I keep saying this, Ace was underated and Oda didn't give him justice, he was just there to die literaly for Luffy's growth and fought too early end game characters who bullied him and would've bully everyone else too (WhiteBeard, Blackbeard, Akainu..) what do you expect ? He was extremely unlucky, while he had everything to be the next pirate king, all the potential, even the blood, after the time skip he would have been like Luffy, an emperor material if he stayed alive. Ace travelled in boat alone and only Yonkos, admirals and 1st commanders of Yonko are a problem for him.

Ace isnt weak and Oda never depicted pre timeskip Haki that well, but at the same time saying he was admiral level is a stretch. He'd get rekt mid difficulty at best by Aokiji, easy difficulty by Akainu and probably Kizaru as well.

This tells you something about akoiji. Here we see how much superior is fire to ice. And we know that according to one piece lava>> fire. He fought with akainu for 10 days even though he was at a disadvantage. It's possible that akoiji has a stronger Haki than akainu but he is at disadvantage because of his devil fruit, or they fairly equal in Haki but akainu has the upper hand because of his devil fruit advantage

I don't think Aokiji went all out in this fight. Aokiji rarely actually shows his full strength unless he has to. I mean he fought akainu for 10 days his bound to be stronger than WB commanders. Furthermore Ace is probably at about Post TS luffy's power level. He was end commander on WB ship he odviously knew haki give the guy some respect. Remember Aokiji's saying "Lazy Justice". He was not by any means hell-bent on killing/capturing Ace nor did he seem it. It's highly likely he only went all out against pirates that actually mean to kill/harm civilians. WB crew/Luffy did none of that. Compared to Akainu's ambitions which were alot more straightforward as shown. likewise his saying being "Absolute Justice" Since he desired to kill Ace and luffy he reluctantly showed more of his strength.

I think one of Odas earlier mistakes was not stating whether Ace could use haki or not. If people like belamy can use it after being in the NW for 2 years, Im sure someone like Ace would be very proficient at using it, he was surrounded by people who were experts at it so he should of been able to use three forms by that point.
