We take a look at the beautiful counter punching of Canelo in his bout against Miguel Cotto in 2015. Our notes:
1. Canelo has two very different speeds: his boxing speed and his extremely quick countering speed. Since he spends a majority of his time in his boxing pace, his countering speed effectively creates respect and surprises his opponents.
2. Canelo mixes up his targets very well. These cuts are in the same order the fight happened, pay attention to how his attacks evolve over the fight. He starts countering the jab by slipping to the outside and countering over the jab with a right. As Cotto adapts, that right becomes a rear upper to the jaw or to the body.
3. Canelo has a lot of counters in his repertoire. Here are some from the fight you can practice:
a) Slip the jab to the right, counter over top with the right hand.
b) Same as a) but come with a rear upper to the jaw.
c) Same as a) but come with a shot to the pancreas or solar plexus.
d) Slip the jab inside while simultaneously throwing a right over the jab.
e) Slip the jab to the inside and come with a left hook to the liver or left upper to the jaw.
f) block a left to the body with your right and come back with a right hand upper or cross.
g) parry the jab across your body, counter with the same hand.
4. Just admire his parry counters. They really showcase the timing, focus, and precision of a champion.
