S stands for Sport mode. The engine revs all the way until the red line and then the gearbox shifts up automatically. It’s designed for a sportier drive feel. It has absolutely nothing to do with overtaking. You can overtake even in standard D mode.

How do you not know how to drive auto bro. You put it in D then ignore the shifter entirely until you get to your destination. Ten times easier than manual

Also the S setting is sport mode, which is just D but lets the engine rev up to 5K-7K RPM before shifting instead of 2K-4K. Dont use it for passing, since shifting to it when the car is in motion is a death sentence for the transmission. Its sole purpose is to make driving more fun.
