Welcome to Divisibility Rules with Mr. J! Need help with the divisibility rules for 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10? You're in the right place!

So what if you're to test if 862 is divisible by 8? It's meaningless to say to look at the last three digits and if they're divisible by 8, so is the number because there ARE only three digits. And if you can't tell one way or the other from looking at the number because of its size then you don't have a useful test. Do this: double the hundreds digit and add it to the tens. Double that result and add it to the ones and if 8 divides that number, it divides the original one.

What is the point of divisibility rules? My granddaughter is a 4th grader and she is learning this. Right now, she is learning this when it comes to reducing fractions. Is there another time that she should use this?
