Watermelon Slim - Too Much Alcohol

Since it's been a while since we've heard about Slim, it may be helpful to briefly tap into its unique history. He was born William P. Homans III in a blue-blooded family in Boston, but rejected this way of life from an early age. He was raised in North Carolina, listening to the housekeeper singing songs by John Lee Hooker. Slim attended Middlebury with a fencing scholarship, but left early to enlist in Vietnam. While lying in a hospital bed, he learned to play the guitar upside down on a balsa wood model, listening to the Mississippi Fred and using a Zippo lighter as a slide. So his unorthodox sound, which he uses here, waving to McDowell on Highway 61. Church Of Blues is the new album (which was released on January 25, 2019) by Bill Homans, also known in the blues community as Watermelon Slim. This is Slim's 13th 69th album, with the first one being released in 1973 (the next game 29 years later…). And I don't think much has changed in the following years as it certainly has a gold handle not the classic Chicago sound, of which some glorious covers are scattered throughout the album, among his own red-hot songs. Church Of Blues, co-produced by Slim and Chris Hardwick, is a mix of seven new originals and seven honors from previous masters such as Muddy Waters and Mississippi Fred McDowell. And he joined some of his favorite blues people: Bob Margolin, John Nemeth, Nick Schnebelen, Albert Castiglia, Joe Louis Walker, and Sherman Holmes. Picking a favorite track wasn't as hard as you might think; how is another song that helped shape my taste in music when I first heard Rory Gallagher sing it acoustically on OGWT and later when he blistered the verses when he performed with the band on the Irish Tour '74; but today Watermelon Slim gives it an exciting excitement and arrogance that makes it look like it was recorded around midnight on a Mississippi Roadhouse in the late 1950's. Damn! This track really has a great pace. Too Much Alcohol with a strong Johnny Winter flavor. Slim's guitar style is different, but the vibe is there. With Albert Castiglia on guitar and Slim leading the way, this is a great track. This is really a great set of tracks, making one of the most enjoyable releases I've heard in a while. That's how the blues sounds to me. I doubt I'll ever see Watermelon Slim play these songs live; which is a shame, but the way he plays and sings shows that the Blues is alive and well and in good hands.
