Actinium was discovered by French chemist Andrew Debierne in 1899. Actinium-225 is one form (called an "isotope") of element 89, actinium. Isotopes have different numbers of neutrons packed into their atomic nuclei. Lee Bernstein, who leads the Nuclear Data Group in Berkeley Lab's Nuclear Science Division, is working on the development of new techniques in the production of nuclear medicines that could create more effective and safer treatment options for life-threatening cancers.
