I think people have heard of so many new battery types that all promise to revolutionize energy storage, only for them to never materialize, that we just don't care until it's in production.

Convenient and concentrated source of sodium would be the waste water output of a desalination plant that is extra salty.

Ok but put it in the long waiting line of revolutionary batteries that never leave the lab.

I often get SHOCKED when I pickup our stainless salt shaker.

Purt Darned Cool. It may be the key to dropping EV costs to reasonable prices.

Sodium batteries may be the future, but for now lithium (based on 180, 000 tons) has actually become more expensive over the past three years because of demand and as Sodium replaces lithium, it’ll get cheaper. For scale, 8 billion metric tons of bauxite is mined annually - so the quantity of lithium used is very small by comparison. Also, lithium can be recycled about 90% after its use in batteries is ended. But thats after 15 years in a car and 15 years as a home storage battery. One of the reasons recycling plants are not starting up in great numbers is because of the longevity of EV batteries - a Tesla Model S is still running after 550, 000 miles and Tesla states after 200k miles their batteries still have 88% state of health (SoH).

what about the Vanadium, is it cheap, is it plentiful, is extracting it environmentally sound?

Sodium for batteries could well revolutionize the grid energy storage industry. This is crucial if renewables are to sustain the grid.

Imagine if they invested in battery tech as much as they do military tech? Humans are insane. There is no reason every human on earth couldn’t share a fantastic standard of living. Except that we are insane.

Sodium battery technology has been around for a long time as you’ve said it has only recently just got to anywhere near the Storage density necessary for EV usage. It needs another jump to really get there in a commercial scalable way so probably not something to wait for butmaybe a year or two away.

Replacing lithium with sodium sounds great... needing vanadium to make it work well doesn't. What you save on lithium goes into buying ~4X costlier vanadium.

What will the environmental cost be, will the fish be affected leading to food production issues.

Ripping out all the batteries in my ev so I can load in 2000 salt shakers....seeing the comment on the salt shaker shocks...plus the E D salt weiner power convinced me

And how are these batteries handled when they reach EOL?

Sodium, is what i would choose anyways, especially once they start lasting more.

Might be used for short distance commute trucks. Can't see it being used for quality EV's with ranges of 500km +. Solid state lithium batteries are the future.

5:17 … cannot be “understated” … ?? Hmm, I think it can easily be “understated” .. perhaps you mean “OVERstated, yes, that would make sense. And whilst I’m at it, I do hope you don’t throw in a “potential” - that wouldn’t be good either.

Interesting, but we're too early in the story. After it makes the quantum leap from the lab to the marketplace is when we are going to need this kind of reporting, so we can get technical specs and actual retail pricing.

Will they work well in colder climates?
