It’s funny how at the time we all thought the X5 was better. Today, you see TONS of these Jeep’s still on the road, but almost none of these X5s have survived (at least in America)

You assess a proper AWD with arguably the best 4wd system ever and say we probably wont go off road. You work for BMW no doubt and as for your channel this is the 1st and last time.

The second you need to put it in 4low with QDII, the Jeep wins hands down!
If you are exclusively driving on roads… don’t buy either!

My dad had a grand cherokee 4.7, 2005 and bmw x5 4.8, 2008.
So, almost 20 years old cherokee still alive and good drive, cant say the same about bmw.

Had mine for years and have no plans to sell. Just fix the stuff that breaks and keep driving it.

That 5.7 Jeep would trounce the BMW in a drag race and outperform handily off road but he wouldn't bring that subject up at all. Winner Jeep!

Plato missed the point as usual the jeep is off road car first then on road car second. The BMW X5 can't go the places off road like the jeep can, and you hardly see any X5's on the road because they are junk and unreliable, while the plastic jeep with that beautiful 5.7 hemi V8 crap's on anything from the BMW stable at that time and even now, wake up Plato!!!!

American cars make sense when priced in America. When you swap the dollar price for the same in pounds (as usually happens) they do not. You end up assessing them against cars they don't compete with in thier home market and can't compete with here.

I purchased this Jeep in the 5.7l trim as my first vehicle that I paid for when I found a job post-graduation. It was used with 34k miles on it. I liked the X5 back then as well. Looking back, BMW is still the more "luxurious" and "fun" to drive on a road. However, I was not only thinking about that. The Jeep was cheaper, and I lived in an area with snow and wanted to be more outdoorsy. The recent BMW lines are probably still more luxurious and fun to drive, but I see more Jeep WKs on the road nowadays than those X5s. BMWs reliability is not good, but tbf Jeep hasn't been reliable, especially since the FIAT merger. Yet, my Jeep is still going and outlasted my wife's Nissan. When we had a rush hour traffic snowstorm where it made news for people being stranded overnight, I told my wife to take my Jeep, and she rode easily over snow mounds where others struggled. I have rode through muddy wooded areas to get to fishing spots. This was back when I only had "street/road" tires (not all terrain) on the Jeep. We have kids, pets, and outdoor gear. I can't imagine throwing that stuff in a luxurious leather padded BMW. I've said all this to say, I don't think there was ever a real competition between these two vehicles. It is about location and how you plan to use it. Two different audiences imo. Still is in 2022, but Jeep has come a ways a bit with luxurious additions. In retrospect, I'd still make the same purchase if given the choice between the two. It was actually between a 4runner and GC at the time, but Jeep was more affordable. Today, I actually wouldn't purchase either GC or BMW because of reliability issues, and I fix my own vehicles. Looking at an Acura or Toyota. But if you still want a BMW or Jeep, buy what you wish. I actually like the special edition "Trackhawk" Jeep, but that is a whole other conversation in price and niche market.

My dad had one of these which I drove a fair amount (2009). Bin quality plastics sure, steering a bit vague but otherwise it drove fine on road imo, and the driving position was great.

show me a bmw owner, that would actually go off road, into forest, to get some wood or just to drive to his offgrid cabin. no. he got the height, 4x4...but its still made for roads or some slight rock paved road. thats why you got that JGCH

Well the X5s are all off the roads, and these are still going.
Plus, parts are reasonable and reliability is great. Sounds nice too, either diesel or petrol. More relaxing to drive than a range rover too of the same period. Especially considering the Jeep will work, unlike the range rover. Honestly, the range rover my granddad has was just so pathetically unreliable.

Fast forward to 2021 and most of the X5s are in the junkyard and these, as plastic as they are, are on still the road.

Of course these should've never been compared.

Don't think the Grand Cherokee was ever built to last as long as something that everyone forgot by now. It also was more than likely built for American roads and off-roads rather than the lil baby roads of the UK.

I own one myself, a 2006 with the 3.7l V6. Mine is even lifted with bigger tires and it drives smooth. I don't understand why he's complaining so much though? He's compairing two different spectrums. Luxury (BMW) vs Offroader (Jeep). Its kinda obvious the Offroader is gonna be rougher riding

In America we would have NEVER compared these two because they're not comparable at all

At least you can drive it after it's rained unlike the X5 ! I'd still choose the Jeep over the BMW

I have a grand cherokee 5.7 hemi and a 04 x5 4.4i e53 and I like the interior of the x5 a lot more than the jeep, you feel like you have room to move in the bmw and I feel like I'm boxed in, in the grand cherokee.
