On August 20 1968 flower power met tank tread when the Soviet Union crushed the Prague Spring. It was a salutary shock in the middle of the most radical agitation of “the Sixties”, reminding those willing to see that for all its faults, Western society was open to protest and respectful of non-violent dissent in the way that other political cultures were not, including our most deadly enemy at the time.

I knew a German family in the 1980s who fled after the '67 crushing. They expected the Soviets to roll over West Germany then, and still did until the Soviet Union collapsed. They were still afraid of them on the other side of the world!

We have started to forget such tyrannies existed, and the dread they caused. The 'causes' people protest today are nothing compared to the terror the Soviets caused.
