In the original, you could plainly tell why Atrus couldn't go to Riven himself: because he was crunching himself to death trying to stabilize it and even a short absence could undo his work. The game makes it clear that Catherine's reacue is a team effort; while you're on Riven trying to save Catherine and capture Gehn, Atrus is staying behind to make sure Riven doesn't spontaneously collapse beneath your feet.
By omitting these details, the remake completely recontextualized Atrus' character by making him look like a layabout that has you do all his work for him. It's made even worse by having him link away and lock away his linking book like a complete coward who bailed on his own wife and sent some random chump on a suicide mission.
Of all the things they could've screwed up, they chose the intro. Bloody hell...

The remake looks breathtaking, EXCEPT for the characters. Riven loses so much of its realism without the actors. I think they *should've* reshot the scenes with new actors. It's totally possible to implement it, just lock the player in place every time an actor is on screen.

I'm not the only one who thinks the original is better, right?

why did they re-record the audio? not only did the original sound better + more ambient, but the performances were better. ugh.

The original ends with Atrus holding up the book and you falling in as the music intensifies and the word RIVEN sweeps into focus bringing you into the new world.

The new version misses the mark by having Atrus instead set the book down and you watching him pass into his other book as it falls into the box on the table. We didn't need to see that. The magic was when the player just pulled into the book held up by Atrus with the music intensifying, and the word RIVEN coming into view.

I'm excited to play the remake though despite the less impactful opening, I do feel it will be a blast to replay through this game. Don't forget, we will always have the original too. Who knows maybe someday someone will patch the videos with better ones.

I prefer the original Russel Crowe 😂, better polycount and animations

This video kinda proves that even lower res pre-renders still look a bit better than modern ultra 4K graphics and cant be surpassed. Both looks great though.

I dunno. Something about the original feels more epic.
It also feels more intimate, like you're sharing the space with the people you encounter in the game. They just really nailed the execution the first time around and the remake kinda feels like a try hard clone.
I think I would have been more happy with a 4k remaster of the original.

Real life actors compared to real time computer graphics. Interesting

...why DID Atrus link back to Myst anyway?

Yeah, much prefer the original's 'live action' video, As good as the remake is there is still more realism in the fabric of the original. Real-world textures certainly look better.

Man, the replacement of the live action characters with kind of mediocre 3d character art really takes away from this whole thing, I understand the challenge here, but I wish there was some sort of middle ground solution they could have used. Capture an animated point cloud version of real actors and put it in the scene as a particle system, lock the player into a cutscene when interacting with real characters and use the original captured videos. Anything other than this approach, it really ruins the atmosphere of the game.

Character models are the weak links in all of Cyan's recent games: Firmament, the new Myst, and now this. The surroundings are photo-realistic, yet the people in them are not. So I understand why many feel it's jarring. It would work if the original game didn't have a lot of FMVs. But the original Riven happens to have *lengthy* FMVs in a few crucial places. But having said that, let's be honest here: 90s FMV didn't look that great either. That was why they died a swift death. They were often badly filmed and badly acted. E.g. the wild acting by Rand Miller himself as Agenor inside the book in the first Myst game. FMV games back then were often a sea of bad acting and filmmaking, which I'm sure traumatized many of you as they did me. All these praises and yearning for the return of FMV that I'm seeing seems to be just nostalgia talking.

Potevano rimasterizzare le vecchie scene e tenerle, il gioco perde molto con la nuova introduzione

They did a good job, Myst got the colours wrong, it was all washed out vs realmyst.
