With isolated SG it sounds like a perfect ACDC song

I think on the orginal recording Pete played a hollowbody Gretsch 6120, which was his favourite guitar in the studio for many years.

Pete's tone in guitar is almost impossible to copy perfectly especially the Live at Leeds Tone

If I am correct, Townshend used a Gretsch 6120.

I have a mid '70s SG with PAFs, and plugged straight into a Fender Blues Jr. I'm still able to get as close or closer to Townshend's tone.
I've been tempted to get a more "Townshend accurate" SG with P-90s but I love the one I have.

Yeah! Do you do a Who week after the Pink Floyd week? 😃
I would definitely like to see how Julia plays the John Entwistle basslines of this song! 🤩

I love these Hit the Tone videos. Even if I do never have the gear to get the tone. 🤘🎸

the guitars pete used to record "won't get fooled again" is well-documented... a gretsch 6120 through a fender bandmaster, both gifted from joe walsh. the tone here, though nice (for the right song), isn't really like the tone on the actual recording. it's too "AC/DC-ish" for me. i think the overdrive is more old school than that. as for pete's tone on "live at leeds", that sound is as much about the room and the ambient reverb, as it is about the guitar and amp he was using (hiwatts and an SG).

I believe Paul McCartney has said that “Helter Skelter” was his attempt to be louder than The Who. I’m not sure if The Who minded.

This is not the studio tone ( as people said, Gretsch+Bassman) nor the live tone (SG Special - or Les Paul Deluxe - with Hiwatt amps) but that's close enough for rock'n roll as they say 😉. I recently bought a little Hiwatt T20/10 and that's much closer if you dime that clean channel.

Sound great, but still no where near the actual tone from the record since he used a Gretsch 6120 into a cranked 59 Fender Bandmaster for the actual tone on all of Who's Next electric guitar parts.
