Palliative care great, huh? I differ. Several years ago, my wife was given a few months to live. The so-called palliative care physician never ONCE inquired about her care The nurse that came to inquire about the type of care the nurse can provide, but ... The interview started off well: what kind of care can we provide? But then when we listed the kind of care my wife required, we were told "OH, we don't do that." SO we asked "Can you tell WHAT care you CAN provide?" She said "I can't tell you. You have to ask and then we will see if we can provide the care. You are, of course, free to hire a private nurse but that will cost you, on average, $1, 500 per month."My wife had to kick my shin under the table so I would keep quiet. But I did tell the nurse "Thank you for inquiring what you can do, actually NOT telling us what you CAN do. Bye, Bye!" So, if I poo-poo the so-called palliative care, you will excuse me. The system failed miserably for me and my wife, and our then 5 year old girl. You might ask what help we asked for: someone to see that my daughter ate dinner and went to bed on time. We didn't think that this was an unreasonable request as I taught at college for 3 hours in the evening and could not do the task myself, and my wife was too ill to see to it that our 5 year old daughter was cared for in the evening for those 2 to 3 hours.
