Many self help books sound kind of the same because the wisdom comes from a specific person and then all the gurus repeat it on their own words. This happened with the book from Stefan Aarnio, David Goggins, the guy who wrote No More Mr Nice Guy. You can tell they figured something out that everyone else repeats

I agree. am rereading books for years. Moral letters from a stoic, I read it 5 times. 48 laws of power - 10 times, 33 strategies of war - 10 times, the way of man - 5 times etc.
I still read new books when am driving, cooking etc.

I always thought that reading books over and over and taking notes burning them into your memory is better than doing a tai lopez and "reading a book a day"... I just can't understand how he could internalize everything he reads doing that

Another tip I do: invest in multi-colored highlighters and post-it notes. Any sentence or paragraph that strikes you as important, highlight it a certain color, and write personal thoughts relating to that sentence on a post-it note according to that color. For example, if a certain sentence in a certain chapter talks about a piece of advice I’ve heard of in say, a podcast, or words of wisdom from a past mentor, I highlight it, and put a post-it note reminding me of that time.

Great points John. Gotta focus on the classics and really digest the content

Yeah I figured this out recently as well.

You cast a wide net by reading new books. But when you find a gem, you re-read it. You get best of both worlds

I remember Bob Proctor reinforcing the idea of reading the same important books over and over again, he would explain that the repetition of the idea in the books would be burned into your subconsious mind, deeply internalizing the ideas of the book, and have it be part of your behavior. He has re-read Think and Grow Rich for over 60 years before his passing, and has also reread books like "As a Man Thinketh", and "The Science of Getting Rich" for multiple decades. In his interview from 1984 "Do you know who you are" on YouTube, he quoted "When you read a good book the second time, you don't see something in it that you didn't see before, you see something in yourself that wasn't there before". Tom McKay has mentioned before in his older videos that he's read "As a Man Thinketh" every morning for multiple decades as well.

The way I like to read books, depends on the book, is if I have issues with sleeping pattern, I buy a book on sleeping, search for the chapter where it talks about sleeping patter, read it, ditch the book until needed futher.

I do this with programming, learning, anything.

Works well. Just need to know when to do this and when to read all the book.

That's what I started to do at least.

OHH, also, I do re-watch, re-read the same thing until I perfect it - that's the best way to do programming as well. Ton of labour/practice and immersing with a book or whatever.

Its a lot of work I must say but worth it ofc.

Great points. My favorite book to reread right now is Atomic Habits. Listened to it dozens of times. Jam-packed with great stuff.

How I read books:

Buy book
Read first sentence
Place on shelf
Never touch it again

How do you come up with new books that are worth reading?

John, great video! Love your channel. Could you consider a follow up video to this video with a review of Richard Koch’s amazing book, “The 80/20 Principle”? Koch does a very practical (actionable) analysis of the Pareto principle (this is literally a power law). His thesis is to focus on the vital few rather than the trivial many. But, there’s a lot more here in this gem have a book.
Please consider this.
Cheers🍻🏖

I read a book, and i must take away some wisdom from it, that i will use around that time.

I can listen to a summary in order to identify if i really want to dive deeper to a new book.

Do i want that kind of knowledge now??
What things i need to learn in order to help me surpuss the obstagles i have right now?
