This really reminds me of my childhood in Southern Canton. If the sugarcanes are chilled and we chew them in the middle of a super hot summer day, it is literally heaven on earth.

I prefer it way over chilled coconut ( just a personal thing). The taste is so nourishing it goes all the way into my soul and there is no addictives like preservatives. I grew up very poor and we did not have bottled water and we did not drink river water straight up, even though the river in my village was CRYSTAL clear and tasted sweet, and I could see the tiny river shrimps, river crabs, sublime green river grass and the fresh water ecosystem.

After China opened up and foreign factories flooded in with paper mills, battery and chemical factories, things just drastically turned the other way. I remember I use to be able to hear the cacophony of frogs and thunderous cicadas, and we kids chased fireflies, iridescent bugs and butterflies, played with muds and floated dead leaves like little boats down the flooded streams after storms. We did not have electricity and running water, but we lived a frugal, harsh, yet down to earth existence that heavily relied on mother earth. Because there was so little light pollution we could see the Milky Way and spot the shooting stars. It was not easy and I really really want to see the big cities and travel outside of China to America.

After I emmigrated and lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years, I went back to my birthplace.... The river was a light milky color with dead fish floating on top. People became much more protective because households now have valuables to take care of and many have lost a lot of trust with each others, along with our innocence. Disappeared along with them are extremely clean air and a close knitted community. I remember I sat by the river alone and tears just kept rolling down, like rivers.

Good thing is that the government is putting a very strict regulations trying to restore the environment and I went back this year and saw some significant positive signs. When I hear people complain about China being polluted, I am amazed that these people could not establish a connection between all the stuff in their homes and apartments with the environmental degradation of the once pristine China. Can't blame them because most people do not have a reference point and can not utilize inductive and deductive reasonings to analyze why China was chosen as the cheap industrial manufacturing grounds to produce some of the most toxic things on the planet with the least stringent environmental regulations to minimize costs for the MNCs. This is what poverty do to people and how people without knowledge and wealth are lured into producing everything for the world at the lowest prices possible, ignoring the impact on human dignity and health, while also get blamed for it.

Anyway, I digress. There is another sugercane variant that is green and skinnier and even sweeter, but realky tough to chew than this black version.

Simple joy in life. (well not so simple after all the hard work put in to plan and harvest them. They belong to the grass family, like bamboos).

I usually tip the farmers a lot when I bought them to show my appreciation. These people usually are so humble and they are the Salt of the Earth. I admire them tremendously.

Hello Kevin ! I know it would require a little more time, but would you consider adding chinese characters for this kind of vlog ? I'm learning chinese for 3 years now and i improved a lot watching food rangers for example, or even your content with subtitles, it helps me getting out of the academic courses that my university provide me with. It would truly help those who are searching to add vocabulary.
Thanks and stay awesome ! ;)

I grew up with that in my house. My dad planted it since he grew up in Cuba and it was everywhere. If you cut it down the middle it makes it easier to chew. For kids we cut it twice down the middle so it's thinner. Oh if you see red streaks that's fermentation and it means there's alcohol. Maybe you will get a little buzz. Next time look for any redness in the sugar cane as you are eating. Usually it's in older stalks

I am from Mississippi USA, and just harvested my own home grown sugar cane. Mine is the dark red variety like what you chewed on. They call it chewin cane down here. I tried my first one today. It was not what I expected, but it was fresh and delicious.

My first time went to YangShuo was about 11 years ago and that’s amazing. A lot of delicious food there, such as beer duck and big nails. I vividly remember that the tv on the bus that i took from YangShuo to Guilin showed “Anna and the king”. And I have watched a lot of your videos, such as when you were in Sihanoukville and in Chengdu with Trevor James etc. And my English has improved a lot since i started watching videos from you guys. Well done man. Stuck in China isn’t a bad decision for you.
