This is a great summary of the book and of whats going on with our southern friends. What she did not address in the book, which I felt left it a bit lacking, is WHY we should cater to these peoples feelings of self worth when they wont even consider the plight of refugee children or gays or blacks in their own communities or anyone else outside their immediate tribe? A great weakness of the left is bending over backwards to understand and placate a segment of population that has no interest in engaging or compromising with them. A great example from this book is how these people feel about environmentalists. Motivated folks who try to help these people climb out of their own filth being met with immediate suspicion as somehow having selfish motives while the company that everyone knows is causing the pollution and CLEARLY has selfish motives is trusted and defended at every turn. I had my empathy thing going until that point. Its like a child who cries when you change them into a clean diaper. You dont cater to that behavior and let the child sit in their own waste because they like it that way. Or do you? It seems like a mistake to me but Im just some guy.
