This is how I interpret the song for me:

I was a really unhappy kid. Everything was wrong and I didn't know why. I was in a constant state of discomfort. I fell into a deep depression and nearly committed. I was 9 years old.
Nobody saw that I was suffering.

Looking back, I can see how awful it was. I wasn't me. Now I can be myself, but the old pictures look so weird. I'm staring at a different person.
I think he'd be happy to see me. I don't think he'd be disappointed, just surprised. I didn't think I'd make it past 10, and here I am, in highschool. He'd be proud of me.
