The West Block: Nov. 5, 2023 | Liberals defend carbon tax carve-out for home heating oil

After the federal Liberals paused carbon pricing on home heating oil, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says there will be no further carbon pricing carve-outs, despite blowback that the policy change only benefitted Atlantic Canada. The Opposition is now calling for that freeze to be extended to other forms of home heating. 'The West Block' host Mercedes Stephenson speaks with Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault about the carbon pricing change, his message to Albertans who deem the Atlantic Canada carve-out unfair, and more.

Plus, some families of hostages held in Gaza have come to Ottawa to urge the Canadian government to increase its efforts in securing their release. Stephenson speaks with Chen Zeigen, the son of presumed Canadian hostage Vivian Silver, and Irwin Cotler, former Liberal justice minister and former special envoy on combatting anti-Semitism, on efforts to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.

The stupidity of people who believe the carbon tax will help the environment is astounding! The utter idiocy in thinking we can control the climate, the weather, evolution is sickening. We have politicians who are either stupid or insane or both. This is how a country is destroyed by a drama teacher.

Still cant fathom why Edmontonians voted for this guy. His behaviour towards judy Wison Raybould during the SNC conflic was disgusting. Trying to defend this latest liberal own goal, just shows that he works for the liberals, not Albertans.

Forty percent of our inflation is directly driven by the carbon tax. That’s from the bank of canada. This Edmonton MP should be ashamed of causing such awful inflation the poor cannot eat. Even worse, defending this tax that is making Canadians starve.

Can we please trend towards real men with real integrity strength and wisdom making real decisions for my children’s future. I wouldn’t take this guys advice about gardening let alone let him decide the fate of my family. Make Canada strong again.

I DON'T want to help to pay for heat pumps for other families as a taxpayer. Far too much of my paycheque goes towards other people and provides zero benefit to myself.

Natural gas is the only viable heating source I have in Calgary, Alberta. Changing to anything else will cost $20, 000 or more. A $26, 000 quote for solar, and that with a 30% provincial subsidy and of course it would fail miserably in the winter to heat my home! A multizone heat pump would be needed to heat my home, assuming it is even capable of heating in a prairie winter. Multizone heat pumps cost more than $20, 000. This move is clear to everyone is about votes in Atlantic Canada where the libs have plummeted in the polls. Just the implementation was done at a higher level of incompetence than the libs are typically prone to exhibit - they could have done a better job disguising their true agenda - to buy votes.

Randy Boissonault needs to go in the next election, I don’t understand how everyone ignores the carbon tax pause that is not available on home heating all across Canada. Give everyone a free heat pump if you want to eliminate the use of heating oil, just be prepared for how they will work in a -40 stretch in January. Randy I could use a new high efficiency furnace in my house for free also

There own finance office says that it costs people about $800 more in carbon tax after you take off the rebate. It's all gaslighting that they do

I love when the government hands out “FREE STUFF”! They’re not free, they’re paid for by taxpayers. And heat pumps are next to worthless when it’s -40C! 🤬🤬🤬 And handing our money back to us isn’t a solution, it’s just another opportunity for government bureaucrats to spend our taxes. 🤬🤬🤬

The Conservatives do believe in responsable climat action. They do have a plan. Terrifying deafness on the NDP/Liberals.
