HPE Firmware Update to fix SSD issues & failures - 960

There has been no less than three problems with HPE branded Intel SSD's. And it has been a really unfortunate story, all the drives would quite all at ones, or with in few hours, and even the best raid safety, does not work without any drives.

So in this video I firmware update some HPE SSD's, to the latest firmware level.

Be aware that the shipping prices is worst case, until it know where to ship to!!

Nice to see my tweet in the video.
The whole point the update wants a reboot is to reset the SSD's, you can also unplug them to do that so you don't have to reboot the whole server

USB-to-SATA adapters probably do not support the SATA IOCTL calls to firmware update the SATA eeprom on drives.
You could see if one of your mini pc's you used to 'remote manage' the datacenter has an E-SATA connector.
You can then set that port to "hot-plug" to allow for swapping.
There are disk dockingstations with both USB and e-SATA connectors. (if you still need to flash a lot of disks that is...)

This "suicide bug" has been affecting these drives for years...

...and Intel is the one who actually provides the firmware, just customized for HPE.

I readed about that bug some months ago. I use hpe servers with original ssds and also some with samsung pro for i think half price from hpe originals. That samsungs run now for arround 4yrs without any problem. so i really think about what i will use in future servers.

There are special USB adapters that you can flash fw with, but I can't remember what they're called at the moment. Intel had them on their website for SSDs a few years back. But there are probably more of them, I just can't remember what those types of usb adapters are called.
They do a more of a "passtrough like-thing".

Today I flashed firmware on a SAS backplane because it had a bug where it would randomly assign different slots to disks. I used Linux as Windows couldn't see the backplane at all :-)

Being able to work with loose drives is why I have a hotswap bay in my desktop computer.

The last HPE bug was due to the counter wasn't "long enough" in bits, I think. So when the counter hit a specific number, it "was full", so it crashed. The new FW has a counter with "more bits", so it can count longer.

Hi Morten, dude how are you doing? I have a question for you - is this issue affected only to HPE branded SSD's? I have non oem intel ssd 960GB with scv10121 firmware on a custom built server, and i can't update them remotely nor physically due to corona, so i'm starting to worry after watching your video.

Thank you for this video. I have serius problem HPE MK0400GCTZA SSD. Its show 8mb capacity. I try to make everything for secure erase but it didn't work. I read about many people have this 8mb bug with intel ssd's but I don't know how to recover this drive now. Do you have maybe any ideas? Thanks

I have a TON of these with original intel firmware, in HP servers, and they worked fine from day one, and still does. So this is clearly a HP firmware issue, not an intel issue.

Even the Intel Dell drives in their Optiplex PCs and Laptops have had sudden failures. Where I worked, we had numerous ones fail within a week suddenly and just one or two a month. That went down quite a bit when I created a powershell script to query the drive firmware and then used the dell utility to flash them and the problems started subsiding. Just keep in mind, SSDs don't fail as gracefully as hard drives do on many occasions. Our latest issues at work are the SK Hynix drives with the orange corners on the drive are failing and need a firmware update to fix them.

hp branded firmware for these drives was new to me. I REALLY wanted to use Intel's/Solidigms much easier updater. I seem to have to do more steps to update fw on my recent drive still stuck on HPG1. When I tried installing, it failed/stopped the process for some unknown reason saying it could be already up to date or something lol and said to check the log (which does not exist!). It's no fun, but maybe running it on a desktop instead of inside my thinkpad will yield better results. Thanks for the video. Don't know what that stuff about teams were about but it sounds interesting. What are you guys doing exactly?
