Wasn't the show given a horrible 3AM time slot in Japan? I recall hearing Sunrise was so certain of its failure that they let the creator keep the IP rights.

I can only imagine how the people that thought it would fail looked when it got critical success and acclaim.

Shout out to Pizza Hut and the CG fan base for making CG a massive success!!! CG was my gateway anime and honestly it kinda ruined most other animes for me. 😅 IMO it was an amazing show and I kept looking for other animes to fill the void I felt once the show was over.

Ironically Pizza Hut in CG is one of the most memorable things in the franchise and this one has been recognized as one of the best anime of all time.

Imagine that they cut down the budget because they think it will fail. Now! They are milking it by bringing the series back with a alternate universe and continuing it with Lelouch of the Resurrection and was rebroadcast in Japanese tv.

Lelouch of the Rebellion success spawned spin off like Akito the Exiled OVA's and Oz of the Reflection manga.

Forgot to mention. With games too, like Re Code and Lost Stories.

And this is the reason why I prefer Pizza Hut over Dominos 😂😂

I really wish the original plans for R2 were public. I've heard of a few like Suzaku having some ancient bloodline powers and an imposter replacing Zero.

At least some of this isn’t true. The director directed several shows before CG, going back to 1999, along with filling other roles for several others. The team also designed the series elements to specifically have widespread appeal—I don’t think the studio thought it would fail. I know they did make them rewrite the second season though, because of a time slot change, which sucks. I feel like I’ve read that the staff said the ending was always going to be what it was though.

You are wrong.

1. Code Geass was originally planned to be 100 episodes, but Sunrise being Sunrise with their history of only producing no more than 52 episodes of a mecha series or anime original series unless its a manga series like Inuyasha, gave creators Taniguchi and Okouchi 50 episodes to wrap up the story. Code Geass aired at after midnight in Japan, which gave them the ability to tell a mature story and have fanservice, etc. When the 1st season ended, due to the phenomenon that CG was that was selling like gangbusters in home video sales, the executives meddled and told Taniguchi and Okouchi that the next season would be airing at a primetime time slot for a casual audience. Episode 26 script was already finished. They had to rewrite the story to take casual audiences into account because they didn't watch the 1st season due to it being late night. While the ending still happened as planned, a bunch of stuff from Season 1 was removed like Suzaku's connection with Geass for example. Rolo was created when he did not exist in the episode 26 script. The subtitle R2 was given because this new plot was Route 2. Route 1 was the Episode 26 canon. R2 starts back at Episode 1 because its a restart.

2. Sunrise did NOT think CG would fail, especially because it was the creators directoral debut. That is wrong. Goro Taniguchi made his full anime director debut with Infinite Ryvius in 1999. It won Best TV anime in 2000. Ichiro Okouchi made his full anime series composition debut with Angelic Layer in 2001. It also won an award. Producer Yoshitaka Kawaguchi approached Taniguchi and Okouchi for the series Planetes, which released in 2003. After Planetes, they proposed CG to Kawaguchi. Kawaguchi immediately got Clamp to help with character designs. It was the 1st time Clamp had been requested to do designs for an anime series. Clamp is huge in Japan. That meant Kawaguchi had high hopes for CG to attract viewers as it was stated that they wanted to make a hit show.

3. Sponsorships happen all the time. No series is made without some form of partnership. Anime studios do NOT make money from airing anime. The air at a loss. In regards to the 2000's, they made their money back through home video releases and merchandising. This has been happening since the 60's with Astro Boy for example. Lastly, companies operate differently in different regions. Pizza Hut in Japan helps sponsor anime because of Japanese management. Pizza Hut in America does not involve itself with anime. They are the same company, but operate differently. McDonald's in Japan made Squid burgers. Why didn't it come to America? Because of different management and Squid is an Asian thing just like Anime is a Japanese.

I don't know where you got your info, but you did poor research.
