I've read about this. The guy, I think he was from Ohio, video taped many episodes of the show and FF through them to see the Pattern of how the money and pitfalls fell. The gameshow makers NEVER altered the Pattern. So, all he had to do with memorize it and -therefore- he KNEW where to buzz. I think he just lived off the winnings for 3 years without working. When the money ran out, he just went back to working.

This is the perfect person to play this character. This story fascinate me on levels. I can’t even explain! The game, the scam the way he figured it out him getting robbed. The whole thing is insane!!!

I watched a ton of Press Your Luck as a kid.

Kudos to the Producers for their recreation of the original set

I watched this dude use their system against them in real time, when I was 8 yrs old. He was an absolute assasin and as an adult, I love it even more because of what it represents in dealing with corporate arrogance and laziness. “Somebody didn’t vet this guy” 😏 They make it sound like he cheated. He learned that they have randomly consistent boards. He just memorized the patterns and reacted. Somebody didn’t vet the programmer and show runner 😂 He didn’t cheat, he was a genius. Let’s go baby!! ✌️

So this guy didn’t cheat at all, dude to the shows limited budget they only had 5 different light patterns and they used the same patterns every show! So this guy taped some episodes and spent weeks memorizing the patterns, particularly when squares 4 and 8 would hit because those were the only 2 squares that never had Whammies. He practiced with his VCR remote, using the pause button as a buzzer. He was unbeatable! During the taping of the show he did 45 consecutive spins without hitting a whammy. He was actually getting tired and messed up and he missed squares 4 and 8. But he didn’t whammy, so he passed the board to give himself a break. Dude won 2 trips, a sailboat, and cash totaling over $100k (over $300k today). Once they realized what he was doing in subsequent shows they added 27 additional light patterns and created a $75k single day winnings limit. They wouldn’t allow him to come back to show as they had a rule that if you won more than $25k you aren’t allowed back. He supposedly called the producer and threw down the gauntlet, “I know guys added more patterns, I bet I can still beat you! Wanna do a tournament of champions??”

Back in the 2010's, the Gameshow network had a 30 minute mini-documentay about this guy and the controversy that ensued. Great to see the story expanded upon.

I remember seeing this live as it was happening. It was pretty insane to think he was that 'lucky'

The show produces were such sore losers. Everyone who ever played any game tries to find a pattern to increase their odds . This guy actually did it with this game show.

From blackbird to this...someone should start talking how good of an actor Paul Walter Hauser is.

"America's Most Wanted" first episode was on February 7, 1988. but this takes place in 1984. It's the little things they always miss.
