I understand that the bottom arm isn’t that big a part of it but I think it matters a lot more for me to fix it personally because where it’s at now I feel is affecting my vault the most. My arm completely collapses and my whole body gets sucked in instead of staying perpendicular to the ground at take off. My body is almost parallel with it immediately due to my zero bottom arm. Any tips to fix this?

The best place for the vaulters center of mass is under the top hand. Experiment-Take a stubby and roll of tape. Roll out a foot of tape and tape it to one end of the stubby. Now place the stubby at plant angle. The tape will stabilize hanging straight down per gravity. This is its resting state equilibrium. In order to “swing” the tape forward and up we have to add energy eg push it to a high potential energy state. This relationship exists in the vault. This is why I say the best position for the vaulters center of mass is under the top hand because it lowers the potential energy curve during post take off which puts more energy in the pole.

The front hand is the only place this can be regulated. Here we need to understand that for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction. Draw a vector opposite the front arm punch direction and it points at the hips/center of mass. When used to keep the center of mass back it causes more pressure on the top hand on the pole. You get better retention on the forward velocity/kinetic energy and more energy driven into the pole at a higher rate eg you can use a bigger pole and get more energy return in the vertical as you approach the plane of the crossbar.

There have been very successful vaulters not using this technique. And you mentioned Bubka’s change. Because we can always find a pole that matches technique and then the vaulter refines the match of pole and technique.

Once the vaulter takes off, any steering of the potential energy curve can’t be redirected horizontally. You’re steering to get a high “skinny” parabola over the bar. The more and earlier you steer up the flatter your parabola will be at the end.

Hey Shawn! I’ve have the top arm down but I’m struggling to know when/how to collapse that bottom arm and get it inside the pole to fully invert, right now I’m stuck in the bucket and when I try to drag my top arm up my leg to extend my bottom arm is blocking me out and pushing the pole away from me . Have you already made a video on this? And if not could you make one???

So right now my issue is that I keep helicopterring (meaning that I am spinning of course) mainly this has to do with my bottom arm but whenever I try to fix my bottom arm like keep tucked in straight instead of outside out, even when I keep it straight and tucked, I still helicopter when I invert. Please let me know any tips on how to fix it

My coach tells me to pull with my bottom arm right off the ground. Is this true?
