Nick Magellan works for the corrupt businessman Charlie Lupo, who presides over an influential crime syndicate in Manhattan, New York. New York senators belong to the realm of this syndicate. Charlie has a recalcitrant daughter, Kathy Lupo. She is in love with Nick. Nick protects Kathy against her father when she leaves her parental home. Charlie always knows not to be judged, but when one of the senators talks too much during a television interview, he is in the center of a massive fraud research by the law.

Boy, I just love these movies from the 40's and 50's wether they are crime movies, westerns or science fiction. Love those cars and the way that people dressed.

This was a riveting film noir - one of the very best that I have seen with more than great performances by Richard Conte [always watchable], Anne Bankcroft, what a prize winning turn and Broderick Crawford as the mafia Don, who plays the role to the hilt. When you see these characters, you will begin to respect them as they are human after all with their strengths and weaknesses. Marilyn Maxwell as the Don's girl has precious little to do in the acting department, except look glamorous. This is a film that you will want to see over again. The dialogue was crisp, scenes don't lag, editing too was crisp. This is a film that should be shown in revival festivals around the world. A top gem among gems!

Celia Lovsky who plays Charlie Lupe's Momma, is best known to Star Trek fans as the Vulcan T'pau in Amok Time. She was also married to Peter Lorre and brought him to the attention of Fritz Lang who starred him in M! An outstanding actress! 👏

Great film. It doesn't paint the mob boss as a stereotypical Dick Tracy type psychopath. We see the human side of the monster.
