For me, after 20 plus years experimenting with both brands, it's always Victorinox on the TOP. My Leathermans break and rust, my Swisstools with the same amount of use and abuse, work and look as good as new (literally). The only Leathermans that are decent, and the only that I would suggest, are the older models, (pre removable wirecutters era). The older the better. When it comes to Victorinox, I can't see a difference in quality either it's new or as old as me, they all look and perform the same. If they have a difference in quality, it's too small for the common user to notice, where in Leathermans, the gap is way bigger.
Spirit X + Ratchet + Explorer + Knipex Cobra 150, is the best edc tool combo for my needs. Covers so much, in such a little package!

Leatherman owners need to at least handle a spirit once in there life the fit and finish standards of the Victorinox multi tools are instantly noticeable over the Leathermans.

Once you own a Victorinox Spirit X, you don’t need any other multi-tool!

This is a well done video in my opinion, Ben. I have always enjoyed the perspective of folks who use these tools more seriously than hobbyists such myself.

Good job!

I got the Victorinox Mx clip a month ago and I find I am carrying it more than my wave

1. Since we are talking multitools with pocket clips: the Spirit is more pocket friendly (weight and dimensions).
2. If only Leatherman would add outside accessible scissors and an awl like on the Spirit... we would get a mini-Surge 🙂

Thanks for pointing out the superior rust resistance of the Spirits over the Wave.

I prefer the Victorinox Swisstool Spirt XC. It is the one with the partially serrated sheepsfoot blade that has been discontinued. With the addition of the new clip it is in my eyes the best edc for pocket carry. I don't care for the one handed opening blade. I never find myself in a situation where it is absolutely necessary to open the blade one handed.
On the contrary, my favorite tool to keep in a drawer or in the car is the Leatherman Surge combined with the bit kit. I do not own any imperial tools as I live in Switzerland. So those that come with the Surge are very handy for the occasional freedom screw.

The only tool leatherman wave is missing is an awl. And I’m perfectly fine with it! Never used an awl

Nice to see an impartial review Ben, so many leatherman owners are unable to consider anything else due to either national pride or brand loyalty regardless of the quality of the tool.
They're pretty well matched now but for me the build quality and rust resistance of the spirit is the winner, (and the awl) if it had the diamond file it would be second to none.

One thing to mention is the fit and finish. Both my waves have play on all the locking tools, while my victorinox tools have zero play in all their separate tools.

I have both the Spirit MXBS, which I use for hiking, and the Swisstool MXBS, which is my daily carry. Watching this video is how I found out the public could buy these! Literally been my dream for years for a Swisstool to have OHO blades! Great video!

Great review. I own original Wave and Swiistool X for the past 15+ years and having my Swisstool on me every day . As an industrial maintenance this Swisstool is just invaluable for me. Wave is nice but more fragile, needlnose tip broke on me on some delicate work I tried to do, so it sits at home 100% of the time since. Victorinox craftsmanship is impeccable.

I have to go with Victorinox in general. I have had the original Swiss Tool for over 17 years and it has not let me down, heavy but tough. - think using it as a hammer multiple times with no damage.. I tried the Leatherman Wave but I am left-handed - that is an issue with the Wave. You will get many blood blisters from the 2 raised thumb openings on the blades when you try to use the pliers left-handed.. Just a watch out for the lefties out there, righties give it a try in your left hand and you will see what i mean. I think Leatherman could have considered 1 out of 10 of the users and made it ambidextrous. I will go with the Clip if it is ever available. Hope this helps someone. My daily is a skeletool, but i dont do the kind of work i used to - Factory Maint.

Always great reviews. Just bought a spirit x plus being delivered today

I figured out by accident that dipping a Leatherman in a big barrel of chain lube solution breaks it in real quick.

After 10+ years with my Wave Gen 2, I know where my vote goes, but having said that, Victorinox more times than not, comes up with gold. Like you said, it's down to preference.

I thought for a long time my Leatherman Wave + is the best, until I own Victorinox Spirit X.

I went through a wave, surge and charge tti. I just bought a spirit mx and its perfect, i love it. There are some things i miss from moving over to using the mx as my edc but damn, the fit and finish, the ergonomics, the reliability, its stunning.

As always a good show. I dont own a swisstool but will soon. Mxbs is on my short list. I do really like my wave + but i can just see the fit and finish of victorinox is better . Thanks for all you do and how well you do it.
