I think the reason you spawned in a completely different area which also clears up why you spawned underground is not only because of the merging of an old world and new version but also the coordinate changes of 1.18

Jordan, you spawned in a cave after porting the world, and because it started in Beta 1.9 Prerelease then ported over to 1.18, the reason why you spawned in a cave was because of 1.18's build/height limit so you most likely were at the same coordinates but it was cave coordinates in the Caves & Cliffs 1.18 version.
