How To Ride In A Group - Group Riding Etiquette

There are a number of unwritten rules for riding in a group to ensure you're safe and welcome on group rides.

Make sure you treat others the way that you would like to be treated and you're a long way towards being a welcome member of a group ride. Make sure you indicate, point out obstaces, and if you need to spit move to the back. Ensure you're not 'half wheeling', wait for people on climbs or if they've had a mechanical and give people encouragement on the ride.

Follow these rules for riding in a group and you'll be welcome on almost every group ride.

You guys are great.  I've learned so much to enhance my riding! I'm 70, so I'm glad you folks came along when you did.

Thanks so much for making this video. It would be easy to think this kind of riding is beyond ex-pro's, but these rules of etiquette benefit everyone.

One thing not mentioned is for riders in the back of a group to yell "car back!" when a car is approaching. This way riders in front who may not hear the car, can form into single file and hug the side of the road for safety.

Dam that's good tarmac. Here in the states we don't see much of that.

What happens to the piece he bites off 2:44  Unfortunately, I see that some cyclists think that they can just throw their waste (energy bars and gels), just as in races on TV.

I like you all, it is an absolute pleasure watching your "Top 10 ..." videos. And most importantly, Matt makes everything so interesting. :):)

maybe half wheeling is within the subject that I'd like to add but I think a very important issue is always "maintaning a safe distance" with the one that is in front of you and especially while climbing if the one in front decides to stand up, the bike goes backwards a little bit at the moment of standing up which may cause the guy at the back to lose control due to wheel contact. but great video as always, very fun to watch. keep up the good work, I envy you guys a little bit ;)

Way to go, now I feel odd because I've never felt the need to spit.

Great tips, but please don't spit your gel rubbish onto the streets or trails.

The half-wheeling part of the video was not correct.

The narrated description was perfect, but the video was showing a trailing rider overlapping wheels.
(a different thing)

Both overlapping wheels are half-wheeling are no-nos, but they are different things.
