MLB Rule 5 Draft Explained | Baseball Explained

The MLB Rule 5 draft is that annual event that few people really understand. But in this video, we will learn just about everything you could wish to know about the draft.

I say it multiple times in the video, but the rule 5 draft is NOT the first-year player draft. The rule 5 draft exists so teams cannot hoard minor league prospects who may be ready for the majors. This video will go over the history of the rule 5 draft, as well as how the current iteration of the draft works. I also mention some notable rule 5 selections such as Josh Hamilton, Johan Santana, Shane Victorino, and Roberto Clemente.

One thing I forgot to mention was if I a player got injured. A rule 5 player must be active for 90 days of the season. So if they are active for 40 days, then get injured for the rest of the year, they are still considered a rule 5 player for 50 days of the next season.

Fun fact: there's also minor league version of the rule 5 draft!!

AAA teams can pick minor leaguers off AA and lower teams while AA can choose Class A players. The MLB affiliate pick players off AA and Class A rosters and those aren't sent back to the original teams if they do make the AAA or AA club. They are instead report to whatever level they are assigned.

Players from the minor league portion of rule 5 draft are usually "depth" players for a team's minor league affiliate.

Do you have a video explaining arbitration? It's a little confusing to me. Commentators talk about it every once and while but they don't explain it very well.
