So despite the raspberry pi and arduino having different voltage requirements you can power the arduino through the USB so long as the Raspberry pi has enough current going through? Is this more or less reliable than using the same set up but each board being powered separately?

Hey @Ryan Krauss, I'm struggling to get the usb serial connection between my Arduino Teensy 3.2 and my RasPi working. Do you mind sharing the code you used? I'd really appreciate it

it is not booting the arduino it is just sending serial data, arduino even dose't has any operating system so it dose not "boot".
the flashing led's on the arduino are just showing that there is data being sent or received in the serial port

How about Arduino Pro mini with FTDI? Can I connect it to raspberry pi thorugh USB?

good tutorials. I am using UART pin ( RX TX) to communicate with uno, do i have to use /dev/AMA0 like you do ?
