I have a Sedona 2500 with 10lb braid as my kayak beater for saltwater creek fishing and bass fishing. I use a 7'6" medium light with it and have gotten everything from a 7lb largemouth to a 34" creek red, and I love it for my style of fishing. I think bass fishermen sometimes get too caught up in the details of a setup and end up with 5 rods that all accomplish the same thing. It's refreshing to see someone understand you can do a very large % of bass fishing with a fairly simple setup. The only thing I'd change is the line test. Powerpro is listed at 10lb but tests at closer to 18, so nothing in any freshwater lake in north America can really come close to breaking it with a competent fisherman on the other end. The 15lb test robs 4-8 feet of casting distance, so 10 or 8 is usually a bit more versatile.

My fav setup is my 6' 6" Uglystik in med with my 1979 Mitchell 300A.
Still gets it done.
I use baitcasters when I need to cast under obstructions ect but mostly use spinning gear.
Cheers!

Get the best spinning gear you can afford. It is supposed to excel at feel, subtlety, and fish fighting ability. I never understood why people spend big bucks on casting and try to go budget on FINESSE gear. I can live with a cheap flipping stick or frog rod, but I'll be damned if I get my heart broken because of a sticky drag on 6lb test.

All I prefer is spinning reels. I’ve owned a few high end baitcasters but I always go back to a good ole spinning rod.

As an old Southern boy (71) I have been what you would call a "power" fisherman all my life. Heavier line fishing heavy cover, moss, grass, pads, wood, etc. but I Do love topwater Rapala fishing. For that I have used spincast until I finally found the Bantam baitcaster by Shimano! That dates myself, huh? What a reel!! Nevertheless, many more balsam lures out there now and I've been entertaining the notion of upgrading my one Spinning rig. I've been eyeing this combo n that combo and trying to match em up myself without spending an arm and a leg and Nathan Quince, you Sir have really helped me out!! You've told me what you like and why you like it with plenty enough detail that makes sense to this old fisherman and I very much appreciate your experience and willingness to share it! I'll be going with the Shimano Sedona 3000 and a 7' medium action with Fast tip spooled with Hi-viz 15lb braid with a mono leader to keep the balsa lures floating high. Thank you Brother Nathan from your new old friend Johnny! God Bless!

I have tried a bunch of different makes and models of spinning rods, but the Shimano SLX 7" Medium - Extra Fast is my favorite. This thing fishes like a $200.00 rod. They usually retail for $99.00 but can be found on sale at times for $70.00 to $75.00. I will also share my opinion on a very very good overlooked spinning reel, the Piscifun Carbon X . They retail for around $80.00.

I was running a Daiwa exceler lt with 6lb braid on a Daiwa presso but the presso exploded into 3 pieces when a monster hit my inline spinner last month. I also run a Lew’s mach 2 with 20lb braid 6’9” medium fast, both have worked great from salmon fishing to trout fishing. I’m looking to upgrade my medium pole and people keep trying to convince me to get a baitcaster but, I would really rather not! I see people always dealing with backlash and other bs. The one thing I like about spinning reels is how versatile they are at throwing everything

Soda can wrapped mono is what i reach the most compared to my Shimano Conquest rod paired with my 2021 Antares DC

I use the Shimano Miravel 4000xg. Never had a better reel than this one. Price is also very manageable.

I grew up fishing spinning gear and did so for 40+ years. But I switched to bait finesse in 2022 and it has completely changed my fishing. There are a few situations i might do better with a spinning rod, but I haven’t picked one up in almost 12 months. I enjoy your channel, and appreciate all the great tips.

I own a few Shimanos for my saltwater but I have to give credit to Okuma. I have a few for Bass fishing and I like that they make thicker bails. It feels sturdier.

I dont think fish care what rod and reel you use. Ive took a bamboo pole and tied line to it with the og hook worm and sinker and have caught fish. But theres a huge market for it and tbh buying and shopping for fishing gear is fun af. Im js dont over think it. If youre new go to walmart and get a shakespeare combo for $25 and youre set.

I was hoping for some specific rod recommendations and all I got was your specialized rods that you built yourself.

Nathan, the links in the description for the comparable spinning rod and reel don't work. Can you PLZ repost them? THX...

My current setups are a Sedona 2500 (with 20 lb braid) on a 7' Daiwa Tatula M/H. And a Daiwa Legalis 2500 (with 8 lb Seguar INVIZX) on a 7' Shimano Convergence M for lighter applications. The 8 lb line & Convergence were recently put to the test when a 5 lb largemouth buried itself in vegetation. I just used extreme patience and finally worked the fish free. And IMO, for the price, the Convergence passed with flying colors.
