Body position... Aerodynamic drag burns 85% of your power on the flat. 80% of your aerodynamic drag comes from your body alone. Aerodynamic drag is by a large margin your biggest barrier to going faster.

The friction force/rolling resistance stays roughly constant with speed, but aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed. In other words, aerodynamic power goes up with the cube of speed, whilst rolling resistance./frictional forces just go up linearly.
Aero drag power rises with speed much faster than friction: at 5kph just 10% of your power goes into aero; at 40kph over 80% of your power is required just to push you through the air.
It is, by a very large margin, the biggest problem.

If you ride long distances at high speeds, you should prioritize aerodynamics and rolling resistance.
If you climb a lot, then weight becomes more important.

Agreed... my daily ride over weather-beaten roads in the upper Midwest USA is more like the Paris Roubaix than most cycle races. As such, when Trek developed the Domane years ago to handle the cobbles, jumped on the endurance bike bandwagon and it's been a game changer for me.

Who can argue otherwise. That's definitely a Young Greg Lemond, right there! Oh my goodness!

1x has more drivetrain friction comparing my GRX and Ultegra bikes. The chainline is worse and the narrow wide teeth on the chainring also increase friction. I like it for simplicity on my commuter but it is slower IME.

Love stopping for a carb rich crepe and an isotonic beer on my long rides... its for the extra speed, i promise!

I ride a Specialized Roubaix, with the Future Shock & pavé seatpost, shod with 35mm tires. Fast & comfy on any terrain.

Looks at his DT Swiss GRC (1400 not the 1100) 50mm deep hoops that Father Christmas bought me - shod with 32mm Vittoria Corsa pro tires with a smug grin.... 🙂

New SRAM 1x setups have not done well this classics season. Is it the riders or the group set that is the problem?

My 32c tires are clearly slower than my 25c. Rim profile and tire construction might make up most of the difference but I’m happy with 25c for my old rim brake bike.

My road bike can only fit 28 mm. I took it out on some tame gavel yesterday. No issues and faster than my gravel bike with 45 mm.

I went 1X last year after watching a video on this channel. I have Sram so it was easy to switch.

Pogacar riding the V4RS made no sense - especially with both the unreleased V5RS AND the Y1RS at his disposal with tyre clearance

ah, i see, the myth that wider tires are slower still persists stubbornly, even in 2025.
