As an owner of an '18 Subie XV who heavily considering purchasing a WRX OR STI model. The release of the WRX exterior design heavily gave me anxiety, because I really believed in the brand, but I felt duped via exterior design and spec wise. An increase of 3 hp on the WRX and the rumored 400 hp on the STI which most likely be only 350hp or 325hp in reality is such a let down.

Spending money on the Nissan Z is way more appealing right now.

This is less about a head to head comparison, and more about comparing generational evolution. Subaru has failed with providing a wow factor to its next gen WRX. Nissan has a far superior lead in providing that wow factor for the next gen Z, inside, outside, and under the hood. Of course the Z is faster, but true car enthusiasts know it’s not about how fast you can go. It’s having the ability to look at every aspect of the car and think “wow, they did a good job with this”.

I have a MY17 Rex, so sad about the new 22 WRX. The new Z looks to be a monster, and is the only car I'm really interested in right now. But in Australia its looking to be around 65k plus most likely. Start saving lol

A point to note.. i just bought a new Z with the sports package in 6spd man. I also own a 99wrx sti. The wrx would destroy it in every performance aspect. (Yes its has 30k+ spent) but it is sad when i payed 80K and for the Z and 45k all in for the subie. But in a positive light, i dont have to worry about calling a tow truck for the Z

To be fair two different consumers being targeted. On top of that both haven’t been driven and only time will tell about reliability

Everyone saying two different audiences: not true. I was excited for both of these cars to be announced. As a long time Z fan, an owner of a 260z and previous owner of a 370z, an owner of an 2021 outback XT, I was looking forward to both cars. The Z and the WRX have always had that mid range enthusiast car value and power per $. Somewhere in between your miata/brz/86/Si cars and your Vette/Higher end muscle cars. The WRX is a huge letdown. The Z on the other hand, wow. All the WRX is now is just a compact sedan with a slightly above average driving experience. I think I would rather have a Camry TRD in all seriousness. I hope the STI makes up for this shameful offering. It is not competitive. The Z is simple, clean, and offers enthusiasts what they want at a great price point. It corrected all of the Supra's wrongs. These cars should be for the same audience, but Subarus method is not going to work here.

Only things that can make the Z fail would be the Performance trim is close to $50k USD, that dealers mark up the hell out of these things, or that Nissan just can't make enough of these fast enough.

The Z is the better driving and better looking car but the reliability is very questionable. Especially if you research how the engine is designed and people's experience with the q60

I’m torn cause I want a 4 door sedan to take not just one kid with me, and I love Subaru’s but the latest models lack like a MF. The Z looks freaking awesome but I do have questions with reliability, and it’s a two seater. Also looking into a newer mustang as well. If anyone could think of any other vehicles that would help. This will be my first ever sports car (always took care of family needs first) so help is welcomed.

The new wrx has stronger internals and can handle a lot more horsepower. It's only running about 13lbs boost vs 18 from the previous model. What does this tell you? There is tons of power just sitting there waiting to be tapped into.
It's obvious that subaru did it this way for a reason. It gives people cheaper insurance and let's it be a car for every day people. But if you want to break out of that then all you need is a simple tune and it will easily be in The 350 to 400 hp range.
And guess what, no paying an extra $100 or more a month for insurance. While the z most likely couldn't handle any more power than stock because of its platform it leaves the z in a place where it is stuck. That much power to just the rear wheels just doesn't work unless you are racing from a roll. The z is good for only 1 thing, going in a straight line...
I'll choose a car that can perform under any conditions before I choose a car that's only good for 1 purpose. So while the z can look better on certain types of tracks it will never be able to compete at the level of the wrx.
Try having fun with the z in the snow or the rain.... Not gonna happen...
I could keep listing reasons why the z isn't even comparable but the nissan fanboys will come in full force. How is the nissan resale value for anything except the gtr. I work in an auto parts store and more people have issues with nissans than pretty much any other car . While I love and appreciate all sports cars, I have to say that this review is waaay off but I understand that it was a year ago and there wasn't much information about the new wrx so it makes sense that you had the opinion you had at that time.

Oh come on, there is no war here. Subaru didn't even show up for the fight. The WRX is embarrassing both in style and performance. Lol, wait for the Well, wait for the Sorry, but the base Z is 400hp, which is something a Subaru fan can't even dream about, even in the STI model. It's a fatty too.
