OMG I LOVE this book!!!
hitler was a mother theresa compared to stalin.
btw germany had private property and a semblance of rule of law during hitler and he did not slaughter any of his helpers except the gay Roehm.
i think kotkin wants to emphasize that at first stalin did not seem so dangerous to colleagues but presented himself as their helper, taking over the boring bureaucracy. all were hysterics and epileptics, like libertarians today.
he was a stranger in russia and had no connection to the land or people. that's why ruthlessness but lenin was even crazier than stalin.
stalin is the greatest politician in history, also the most evil and because of the fear he instilled in the kgb trump is presz now because the kgb that stalin created elected trump. stalin only had a vice president then - wallace.
i'm a world expert on stalin and late imperial russia.

ps its funny how stalin reacted to sorge's intelligence that germany will strike - "tell him to fuck his mother" and "if u come to me with this shit again heads will roll", slams door haha
